Westbound Maine Avenue SW Traffic Shift
Anticipated Start: June 15, 2026
(WASHINGTON, DC) —The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in coordination with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), will implement a new traffic configuration on westbound Maine Avenue SW as part of construction activities for the Long Bridge Project.
Beginning as early as June 15, 2026, traffic on westbound Maine Avenue SW between Ohio Drive SW and the Salamander Hotel entrance will be shifted into an interim configuration to allow crews to work in the median. This new configuration is anticipated to remain in place until approximately August 2026.
The Westbound Maine Avenue SW traffic shift will maintain:
- Two travel lanes in the westbound direction.
- Pedestrian access in this area. Please follow detour signs.
Drivers are encouraged to allow additional travel time and follow all posted detour and traffic-control signage in the area. Traffic-control devices will be in place to safely guide motorists, pedestrians, and other roadway users around the work zone.
Motorists should expect delays when traveling through the work zone and are advised to use caution near road work crews and equipment.

 Long Bridge Project
The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Long Bridge Project is a 1.8-mile rail improvement that will relieve one of the biggest rail bottlenecks on the East Coast. The project will improve reliability and expand capacity for both passenger and freight trains traveling between Virginia and Washington, DC. The project will create a continuous four-track corridor between the Long Bridge Aquatic Center in Arlington County, Virginia, and L’Enfant Plaza in Washington DC. It includes five new rail bridges and two new pedestrian/ bicycle bridges. A new two-track rail bridge will be built over the Potomac River next to the existing two-track Long Bridge, along with a new bike and pedestrian bridge connecting Long Bridge Park and the Mount Vernon Trail in Arlington to East Potomac Park in DC.
The Long Bridge Project is one of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s many rail projects across the Commonwealth. Learn more at: https://vapassengerrailauthority.org/.
