Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project – Advance Utility Relocations
(WASHINGTON, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is working with utility partners to complete advance relocations needed to allow the construction of the Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project. Over the coming months, residents and commuters will see utility work zones in multiple locations on Benning Road NE between 34th Street NE and Minnesota Avenue NE.
Beginning on Monday, November 24, Washington Gas will implement overnight closures of the ramp from eastbound Benning Road to DC 295. The closure is required to allow construction of a relocated 12 inch gas main in the ramp. A detour will be established that directs traffic to remain on Benning Road, turn left on Minnesota Avenue, and left on Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue to access northbound or southbound DC 295 at the interchange with Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue and DC 295.
Traffic controls, including signage and detour information, will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the area. DDOT urges all travelers to stay alert, follow posted signage, and use caution near the construction zone. The posted lane closures and detours are needed for construction activities associated with the Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project.
The Benning Road Bridges and Transportation Improvements Project will reconstruct Benning Road NE from 34th Street NE to Minnesota Avenue NE, including the bridges across DC 295 and the CSX railyard, and the ramps between Benning Road and DC 295. Project construction is scheduled to begin in 2026.
