Plumbing Licensure Through Reciprocity | New Opportunities for District of Columbia (DC) and Maryland Journeymen and Master Plumbers and/or Gasfitters
In support of the Board of Industrial Trades, and under the leadership of Mayor Muriel Bower, the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) is pleased to announce that Journeymen and Master Plumbers and/or Gasfitters (licensed in Maryland) are now eligible to become licensed in the District of Columbia through reciprocity, thereby eliminating the need for examination and streamlining the process for licensure. This makes it easier for Plumbers and/or Plumber Gasfitters to work in DC, but also benefits customers by increasing competition and the supply of Plumbers and Plumber Gasfitters from which customers may choose.
-
Reciprocity applications are now accepted. The cost for licenses is $175 for Journeymen Plumber and/or Gasfitter and $185 for Master Plumber and/or Gasfitter. All Plumber and/or Gasfitter licenses expire on March 31, 2026, regardless of when they are issued.
- To be eligible, licensees submitting reciprocity applications for DC licensure must have received their license by examination from Maryland, i.e., they must have taken a test, and must hold a current active license in good standing.
- To request a letter of good standing or verification of a Maryland license via Examination, applicants should visit Maryland’s state Plumbers and/or Gasfitters board website. Once obtained, applicants will be required to upload the letter of good standing or certification with their DC application.
To submit a license application through reciprocity, please visit the DLCP Board of Industrial Trades website at https://dlcp.dc.gov/node/1619081. If an applicant does not yet have an account, they will need to create one to be able to apply.
For more information, please contact Occupational and Professional Licensing (OPL) using our online inquiry form, via email at dlcp.dc.gov, or by phone at (202) 671-4500.
Thank you.
