Pennsylvania Avenue West Streetscape Project to Begin Monday, July 21, 2025
(WASHINGTON, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is scheduled to begin construction work on the Pennsylvania Avenue West Streetscape Project (Penn Ave West) on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Initial underground work will impact the 1900 and 2100 blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue NW on the south side of the street as crews work to upgrade stormwater, traffic signal, and lighting infrastructure. No detours are anticipated and at least one travel lane will remain open during construction. The underground infrastructure work will progress eastbound and then loop back to the north side of the street and is estimated to take eight months, weather and other conditions permitting.
Construction work will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and some Saturdays or nighttime work as needed and approved by DDOT.
Sidewalk upgrades, green infrastructure, and bike facilities are expected to begin construction in spring 2026, weather permitting, and will take approximately 15 months.
The project spans Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 17th and 22nd Streets, encompassing key intersections and public spaces. Construction is expected to last 24 months, with substantial completion anticipated by fall 2027, weather and other conditions permitting.
Penn Ave West is a crucial link for residents, commuters, and visitors traveling between neighborhoods such as Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, the Golden Triangle, and further downtown. The corridor is home to major institutions and attractions, including Edward R. Murrow Park, George Washington University, the World Bank, the United Nations Foundation, and popular restaurants like Founding Farmers, Immigrant Foods, and District Commons.
Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area and to follow all posted signage. DDOT thanks the public for its patience during this infrastructure improvement project.
