Update: Preconstruction Tunnel Work for Connecticut Avenue Streetscape and Deckover Project
(WASHINGTON, DC) — Update: The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is now scheduled to begin cleanup and removal work in the tunnels underneath Dupont Circle starting Monday, July 7, 2025, as part of the Connecticut Avenue Streetscape and Deckover Project, weather permitting. This work was postponed one week to accommodate changes to the maintenance of traffic.
This portion of the project is considered preconstruction work and is prior to any construction of the above ground deckover work on the project.
Removal of the tunnel debris will be via access areas located underneath the Circle. To ensure safety and to provide an area for removal trucks, the contractor will need to install barriers to cordon off the outside NB and SB lanes.
The installation of the barriers is anticipated to be completed by Wednesday, July 9, 2025, weather permitting.
- On Monday, July 7, 2025, the Southbound (SB) lanes on Connecticut Avenue NW from Q Street to just north of N Street NW will be fully closed from about 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Southbound through traffic will be prohibited from entering the underpass and will be diverted to the SB Connecticut Avenue service lanes. Traffic will be detoured to use the Circle travel lanes. The contractor will install signage and concrete barriers to support the temporary traffic shift.
- On Tuesday, July 8, 2025, the Northbound (NB) lanes on Connecticut Avenue NW from just north of N Street to Q Street NW will be fully closed from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Northbound through traffic will be prohibited from entering the underpass and will be shifted to the NB Connecticut Avenue service lanes. Traffic will be detoured to use the Circle travel lanes. The contractor will install signage and concrete barriers to support the temporary traffic shift.
Once the barriers are installed, one lane in each direction – northbound and southbound – will remain open to through traffic beneath the Circle for the duration of the project.
Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area and to follow all posted signage. DDOT thanks the public for its patience during this infrastructure improvement project.
