Retiring Legacy MAR Web Services
OCTO will retire Legacy MAR web service on June 30, 2025. After this date, Legacy MAR web services will no longer be available. This means that any applications pointing to these web services will not produce results for MAR address and location validation.
After launching the new MAR 2 API in October 2021, the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) announced that Legacy MAR had reached maturity. This meant that while legacy services are stable, DC government would no longer develop new applications from it and nor would we support it with enhancements. Legacy MAR and MAR 2 API have been operating in parallel for the last 4 years.
To clarify, any address validation, Ward lookup, or location lookup method using the citizenatlas.dc.gov URL is considered a Legacy MAR web service.
OCTO recommends application owners transition to the new MAR 2 API at mar2.data.dc.gov, as soon as possible to continue to enjoy the District’s premier address and location validation tools.
Why is Legacy MAR Being Retired?
For decades, OCTO has maintained Legacy MAR web services as a foundational developer set of tools for the complete standardization of addressing components. However, these legacy services lack the modernized enhancements in security, output formats, API management, and performance that comes with the new MAR 2 API.
What Should You Do Now?
OCTO understands how important the MAR web service toolset is to everyone. We encourage applications developers to migrate any remaining applications over to MAR 2 API so that all customers can benefit from MAR 2 API. The Data Developers Portal for MAR 2 API is your guide to migrate or build new applications that need authoritative District Government addressing components.
Our goal is to continuously improve MAR 2 API with new features and functionality. Check out the MAR Viewer to perform a single address lookup and display attributes.
