Winter Driving: Beware of Icy Driving Conditions
The District of Columbia had its first big snow of 2025 in January. The District's Snow Team did a beautiful job of clearing our roadways and sidewalks. However, icy conditions can persist no matter how clean the roads are!
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2022, there were 498 fatal traffic crashes, and an estimated 32,213 injury crashes that occurred when there were snow/sleet conditions at the time of the crash.
Before driving after snow fall, clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle's hood, roof, windows and lights. Be aware of hazardous road conditions and drive carefully on bridges, ramps and other elevated structures as they tend to freeze before the roadways.
Increase your follow distance between the vehicle in front of you to safeguard against sleek roads and possible crashes. Wear your seatbelt, stay alert, and don't forget to use your headlights when conditions create visibility issues. Drive safe, DC!
