Oxon Run Park: Spotlight on a Hidden Gem

May 2024

This month we are highlighting Oxon Run Park! Nestled within Southeast DC, Oxon Run Park serves as a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. As the warmer months approach, the park becomes a vibrant hub for outdoor enthusiasts. However, many people might not know that this little oasis exists in the first place. Established in 1971, Oxon Run Park is the largest park under the Department of Parks and Recreation’s jurisdiction and yet has received very little in the way of recognition or investment until recent years.

Through efforts like the forthcoming Department of Energy and Environment-led stream restoration project and the installation of The Well urban farm in 2022, Oxon Run Park is receiving the spotlight it deserves. These improvements not only have enriched the health of the wildlife and local ecosystem but also give visitors a chance to further connect with nature and unwind. Whether it's jogging along the winding paths, picnicking under the canopy of trees near the James Bunn Amphitheater, or participating in one of the many activities put on by community organizations such as Friends Of Oxon Run, Casey Trees, or The Green Scheme, there is plenty to do. More importantly, the park serves as a model for celebrating natural beauty within the District while also promoting the important role green spaces play in our collective well-being. For those who want to visit, the park is only a 10-15 minute walk from Congress Heights Metrorail Station and is serviced by the A6, A7, W1, and W2 Metrobuses. Take a weekend to explore Oxon Run Park and witness its often-overlooked beauty for yourself.
