Traffic Advisory: Southbound & Northbound Lane Closures – For the Removal of The Old Douglas Pedestrian Bridge
April 5, 2024
(WASHINGTON, DC) —The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will implement temporary, overnight closures of the North and Southbound lanes on DC-295 on Friday, April 5, 2024, weather permitting.
If weather does not permit the safe removal of the bridge on April 5, 2024, DDOT will move this activity to Friday, April 12, 2024
All closures are required for the safe removal of the main span of the old Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge.
Temporary overnight closures will be implemented beginning Friday, April 5, 2024, at 8:00 pm until Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 5:00 am, to minimize impact on residents and the public.
The DC-295 detour will consist of two-lane closures of the North and Southbound lanes, with intermediate, full closures between 8 pm and 5 am. Work will take place adjacent to the Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge (between Quarles Street NE and Nash Street NE), weather permitting. Please use alternate routes to avoid traveling on DC-295 during this time. Closures will be in effect beginning at Route 50 (John Hanson Highway) Southbound and traveling northbound at Benning Road NE.
During this time, while the new pedestrian bridge is being completed, pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the Nash Street NE Pedestrian Bridge.
The closure will be in place on Friday, April 5, between 8 pm and 5 am, weather permitting.
Once completed, the Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge project will remove and replace the existing bridge over Kenilworth Avenue, NE (DC-295), and adjacent service roads with a new bridge with increased vertical clearance and ADA-compliant ramps, as well as improve the bridge’s structural integrity.
