(WASHINGTON, DC) —The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is alerting all stakeholders to expect traffic pattern changes on 6th Street NW from S Street NW to Rhode Island Avenue NW and along S Street NW from 7th Street NW to Florida Avenue NW.
These traffic pattern changes are necessary to construct the S Street Revitalization Project, which has an anticipated end date of Summer 2025. Overall construction hours for work on S Street will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, with occasional Saturday work.
The first phase of work will take place in the 1700 block of 6th Street NW and is anticipated to begin on November 6, 2023, weather permitting, and extend through April of 2024. Please note the following details specific to this phase of work:
-
Phase 1 Location Details:
- 6th Street NW from S Street NW to Rhode Island Avenue NW
- Construction hours: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday, with occasional Saturday work pending prior authorization.
- Parking restrictions will be needed during construction on either the northbound or southbound side; No Parking signs will be posted at least 72 hours prior to the start of work.
- 6th Street NW will have curbs, gutter, driveways, ADA ramps, and underground utility improvements for storm drain and water service.
- Work for this phase will be done in two stages for the west and east sides to minimize disruptions to residents.
- If temporary sidewalk closures are needed, safe accommodations will be provided for pedestrians using channelizers, detours, and signage.
One lane of traffic will remain open during construction for this project. Updated traffic advisories will be posted prior to moving to the next phase of work.
Traffic controls, including signage, will be in place to guide motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians safely through the work zone. All roadway users are advised to stay alert and be observant of signage and work zones while traveling in this area.
Once complete, the S Street NW revitalization project will include improvements such as sidewalks, streetlights, green infrastructure, underground utilities, traffic signals, delineated bike lanes, pedestrian safety enhancements, and other streetscape elements.
