Dear DCRA Customers,
This month, we are thrilled that Mayor Muriel Bowser has proclaimed May as Building Safety Month, and the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) joins the International Code Council (ICC) to celebrate. Building Safety Month is an international campaign that has existed since 1980 to raise awareness about building safety – a core function of DCRA. This campaign reinforces the need for the adoption of modern, regularly-updated building codes, and helps individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures.
DCRA is responsible for regulating construction and business activity in the District of Columbia. Through our permitting and plan review processes, we confirm compliance with building codes and zoning regulations. Through our inspection processes and oversight capability, we ensure that buildings are built properly and that structures are safe and habitable.
We understand the need for safe and sustainable structures where we live, work and play, and this is precisely why DCRA launched innovative products like Tertius, our third-party inspections marketplace that increases our ability to monitor and identify improper activity in near real-time, and a Contractor Rating System to empower residents in making informed decisions about who to hire.
Each day, the staff here at DCRA works hard to ensure that you are informed and well-served. At the core of everything we do is our commitment to keeping the people in our city safe. We take seriously all customer concerns and understand that the small things we do every day make our customers’ lives and work go better. We respect our opportunity to serve. Thank you.
Stay safe.
