DC FEMS Chief

Welcome!

The Right Care, Right Now program launched in 2019 to improve the health of District residents and conserve DC Fire and EMS resources.

Depending on your unique situation, the operator may connect you with a nurse who will ask you about your symptoms and then refer you to the most appropriate care. Possibilities include:

  1. A local clinic or urgent care facility: Transportation to and from the clinic is available for eligible patients, including non-ambulatory patients.
  2. Self-care: The nurse will provide information and medical advice if your symptoms can be handled at home. Depending on your situation the nurse may also send Ready Responders to your home. These are EMS providers who will visit you within three hours to give you an in-home assessment, to provide medical management and patient education, and to set up follow-up appointments.
  3. Telehealth: The nurse may connect you with a medical provider for a virtual appointment via telephone or video conference within an hour from your 911 call. During the virtual appointment, the medical provider will be able to provide information and conduct a medical assessment. If they determine you need an in-person visit, then a same day clinic appointment will be scheduled for you.

To date, we’ve diverted thousands of patients from the EMS system and into more appropriate care. Visit our homepage to learn more about the Right Care, Right Now program.
