Faster, Easier-to-Use Wizard Expanded to Include Trade, Solar, Raze, and Demolition Permits for Residential Projects and Trade Permits for Commercial Projects
Last Spring, the Department of Consumer of Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) launched the DCRA Permit Wizard, our innovative, customer-friendly online permitting application.
Now, we want to further empower our customers to start even more building projects by adding trade, solar, raze and demolition permits to the application for residential projects. We have also expanded to include trade permits for commercial projects if no building permits are required, or those projects for which building permits have already been obtained.
Additional New Features Also Added
Now, customers may:
- Use enhanced search capability with the dashboard, identifying projects by full or partial project name, project identification number, permit number, or street address;
- Easily find their address using an intuitive address look-up; by entering only the street number and street name a list of corresponding addresses will populate;
- Download documents or forms provided by DCRA to review or complete;
- Update contractor information if a change is made after the initial project application in the Permit Wizard; new permits will be available for download if permits have been previously issued; and
- Receive automated emails alerting them of photos, floor plans, contracts or other additional documents needed, and upload them into the Permit Wizard to aid Homeowner Center plan reviews.
Working Hard to Make the Permit Wizard Even Stronger
We have heard from many customers who have used the Permit Wizard and cite the great user experience. When looking at the data, we are also seeing great improvement in streamlining the permitting process.
As a reminder, the Permit Wizard uses a wizard-based approach, guiding customers through a series of questions, and in response:
- Identifies the permits needed for the entire project – customers no longer have to know permit types in advance;
- Advises the customer of the estimated total cost of permits;
- Informs the customer of anticipated plan reviews by DCRA and sister agencies, required documentation, anticipated inspections; and
- Provides useful advisories and notifications about their property.
In the future, we will continue to improve the robust functionality of the Permit Wizard. For now, adding trade permits that do not have the required building permits for commercial projects, permit extensions, after-hours permits will continue to be handled through the Citizen Access Portal.
How to Apply for Residential Building Permits or Commercial Trade Permits:
- Select DCRA Permit Wizard on dcra.dc.gov and use your single

- Name the project, identify the professionals associated with the project, enter the project details; and
- Submit the application.
The DCRA Permit Wizard: faster, easier, more efficient and available online at our customers’ convenience.
