2020 Recap
What a year this has been! So many unpredicted changes and a total uprooting of our norms, but we made it through, together. MOWPI along with all other agencies, has had to pivot and learn new ways to connect to District women and continue our programs, and you all have been with us every step of the way. As we look back on this year, we want to simply say thank you for your continued support. Take a walk down memory lane with us as we highlight some of our favorite moments of the year.
#BeTheMovement Policy Bootcamp
We began the year with an impactful #BeTheMovement Policy Bootcamp. We spent a half day with learning more about the needs of the District the necessary tools to run for office. We’d like to send a special thank you to our partners at the DC Commission on Women, Ignite National, Running Start, the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations Services, Children’s National Hospital, Census DC, the Mayor’s Office of Talent and Appointments and many others for making this event one to remember.
Washington Women of Excellence
Our last event pre-pandemic was the wonderful Washington Women of Excellence Awards! Hundreds of you joined us and Mayor Bowser as we honored a few women in the District that are leading the fight against gun and domestic violence, working to ensure access to quality healthcare, leading in housing and education issues and more. These women help make the District a great place to live work and play and it was a pleasure to honor them. A special thanks again to our honorees:
Indira Henard
Naseema Shafi
Natalie Hopkinson
Moms Demand Action
Be’la Donna Band
Women's Equality Day
In the historic centennial year of the Suffrage Movement, we virtually celebrated Mayor Bowser’s 6th Annual Women’s Equality Day and the participation was amazing! Over 300 of you logged on to hear from our wonderful Mayor and panelists below, and we cannot express enough gratitude for your continued support.
Stephanie Young, Managing Director for Culture, Communications & Media for When We All Vote.
Johnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D, President of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW)
Patricia A. McGuire, President of Trinity Washington University
Tierra Stewart, Fellowship Program Director of Ignite National
Stella Makuza, DC Youth Mayor
Our event was also made special by the help of Andra “AJ” Johnson of Serenata who served as our virtual mixologist for the evening, as well as the Mayor’s Office of Talent and Appointments, ServeDC, and Thrive by Five who presented opportunities join the many efforts of the city.
Suffrage Centennial
To help honor this milestone year for women’s rights, we partnered with the Commission on Arts and Humanities, the Department of Public Works and muralists Mia DuVall, Cita Sadeli and Candice Taylor to unveil a new mural commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, and paying homage to the Women’s Suffrage movement. This mural serves as a symbol of hope for future progress and is a wonderful mark on milestone year.
#MaternalMondays
Our #MaternalMondays series continued virtually this year, and we were fortunate to have several dynamic conversations loaded with resources and tips for new and expecting moms and families. We sincerely thank each of our many panelists this year, who helped us keep District mothers abreast of new and existing information to keep them and their babies healthy.
Breast Cancer Awareness
We partnered with several organizations this year to recognize important observations. One of which was the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where we partnered with Unity Health Care and Howard Cares to highlighted opportunities for District women to receive free breast cancer screenings.
Domestic Violence Awareness
We also partnered with the Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants (OVSJG) , the DC Rape Crisis Center and DC Commission for Women for a special virtual service project to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and to highlight domestic violence agencies that service women survivors in the District.
COVID-19
DC has a new tool to help you know if you might have been exposed to COVID-19
Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Health has announced the DC COVID Alert Notice, also known as DC CAN, a new mobile exposure notification system for the District of Columbia.
DC CAN notifies you if you may have been exposed to COVID-19, allowing you to seek timely medical attention and reduce the risk for your family and friends. It was created with both public health and public trust in mind: It’s easy to use and ensures your privacy. No location or personally identifiable information is ever collected, stored, or transmitted while DC CAN is enabled.
Visit coronavirus.dc.gov/dccan to learn more.
As numbers begin to rise again across the nation, Mayor Muriel Bowser is working to ensure District residents are taking proper protocol in stopping the spread. If you are experiencing any symptoms or have encountered someone who has coronavirus (COVID-19), contact your healthcare provider and visit your nearest testing site. Save time in line and pre-register at coronavirus.dc.gov/register.
Help us decrease the spread by always wearing your mask when you leave your home. Visit coronavirus.dc.gov for frequent updates.
THANK YOU!
Many thanks again for a wonderful year, with MOWPI, despite the unforeseen challenges. We have so much more in store for you in 2021 and we are excited to have you all continue along with us. Thank you and see you next year!
