World Series Champs
Congratulations to the Washington Nationals, our 2019 World Series Champions!
In celebration of the District of Champions, we must pay homage to The Homestead Grays, one of the most successful professional Negro League baseball teams in the nation. Here are a few of their accomplishments:
- 10 Negro National League Titles (1937-1945, 1948)
- 3 Negro League World Series Titles (1943-1944, 1948), where they played the champion of the Negro American League.
- The Homestead Grays were the last team to win a world series in DC since 1948.
Howard University Hospital exists where Griffith Stadium once stood, it was the venue where the Homestead Grays played. There is a museum inside of Howard University Hospital called Freedmen's Hall that pays tribute to the Homestead Grays, the Negro League, and Griffith Stadium.
Here are photos from the 140th Anniversary of the National Negro League in Freedmen's Hall.
