Today is the day! On today, October 1, 2019, the District of Columbia is officially eliminating the sales tax on diapers!
On average, a pack of diapers is about $11.00, PLUS TAX, and a newborn baby uses about 10-14 diapers each day during the first few months of infancy. It is no secret that the cost of diapers does not stop after a baby’s first year of life, it continues until they are potty trained and even beyond. So, if you add all of those days, months, and years, I’m sure you think that sounds like a lot of money – because it is!
The cost of diapers does not include the other costs of raising children, from formula to food to clothes to child care – the list goes on and on, especially as they get older. Our city, our Mayor, and our offices are committed to finding, supporting - and more importantly funding - programs and ideas that put money back in the pockets of DC families; programs that keep DC affordable all residents. The District’s elimination of the tax on diapers in a part of that commitment.
From today on, when you go to purchase diapers, take a look at your receipt. Make sure that you have NOT been taxed on the purchase of diapers. We know: A dollar here and a dollar there may not seem like a lot, but over time, it adds up. It is our hope that you will feel the added value for your family, and we ask that you spread the word and share the good new – on October 1st diapers are tax free in the District of Columbia!
