Welcome to the DC Board of Barber & Cosmetology's (Board) inaugural newsletter. Licensees in the fields of barbering and cosmetology are uniquely qualified to raise the standards of practice in services provided. The Board protects the public health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of the District by ensuring that individuals engaged in these practices have the specialized skills and training required to perform such services for the public. Mark Wills, Barber and DC Board of Barber and Cosmetology board member, has been named the National Association of Barber Boards of America's (NABBA) president. Mr. Wills looks forward to continuing NABBA's mission by bringing a unique blend of vision and distinguished achievement, assuring the Association's commitment to learning and leadership.
NABBA was formed in 1926 for the purpose of maintaining professional standards and policies in the barbering industry. Membership in the NABBA is open to state barber boards and other entities responsible for licensure or other regulatory functions of the barbering profession.
The mission of the National Association of Barber Boards of America is to support state licensing boards in their authority to protect the public as it applies to the practice of barbering by upholding health and safety standards and by maintaining the policies and protocols of the barbering industry.

The Board is committed to continuing education (CE) and offers multiple opportunities for licensees to fulfill CE requirements each year. The Board held its 13th Annual Practitioners Forum: Modernizing Tradition in June 2019. Sessions included a presentation on Properties & Disorders of the Hair and Scalp (Identifying Problem Areas), and Quality Customer Care and Service -- Before, During and After Service.

The Board offered a 4-hour class for barbers on the origins of barbering in March 2019. Attendees learned about the history of barbering, ethics and professionalism, and a haircut demonstration. |

In November 2018, the Board offered a course on mastering power and influence in the industry. Education provided included classroom logistics, marketing and sales, and principles of ethics. |

Continuing Education Requirements
DC Barber, Cosmetology, and Specialty licensees must complete six continuing education (CE) credits during each two-year cycle period to renew a practitioner license. Licensees must submit to the Board proof of completion of at least six CE hours from an approved CE program or course during each two-year license period.
- Barbers must complete six CEs by the next renewal date–September 30, 2019
- Cosmetologists and Specialties must complete six CEs by the next renewal date–April 15, 2020

Board Meetings
The Board holds meetings at the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, 1100 4th Street, SW, Washington, DC 20024, on the first Monday of each month at 10 a.m. Meetings are open to the public.
