Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to DDOT with you concerns regarding the C Street NE Rehabilitation Project. The planning and design process for this project has been a collaborative effort to improve safety and comfort for everyone traveling in the corridor. DDOT originally presented 65% design for the C Street NE project in February 2018. Following additional traffic analysis and model validation, DDOT identified some serious flaws in previous analysis, and in April 2018 presented a revised 65% design that attempted to address operational and safety issues in the February design. DDOT has heard a significant amount of feedback and concern from you and others in the community about the proposed design revisions and today we are announcing additional changes in response to those concerns.
We are now proposing in a June 2018 draft of the 65% streetscape design which incorporates that significant feedback. The June draft maintains most of the February 65% design plans. The only changes now remaining from the February draft are critical safety changes to separate high volume turning movements from bicycle traffic in order to enhance the protection of people biking in the corridor. In addition to revised design plans, we have posted a technical memorandum on the various designs and traffic analyses.
DDOT will host a public meeting on Monday, June 11 to discuss the second update to the 65% design and answer any questions about the changes. We think the changes remain consistent with the original purpose and need for the project, and we are excited to advance a project that meets community goals and objectives. A summary of the 65% design changes from February to June is below. We invite you to look over the updates to the design and attend the public meeting at Rosedale Community Center, 1701 Gale Street NE, from 6:00-8:00 PM on June 11 for further information.
Thank you again for your engagement with DDOT, and your support for making a safer C Street.
Sincerely,
Jeff Marootian
DDOT Director
