White House Names Washington, DC, a Summer Impact Hub
On Monday, May 16, 2016, the White House announced that Washington, DC was selected as a Summer Impact Hub, part of President Barack Obama’s Summer Opportunity Project. This effort, led locally by the Workforce Investment Council (WIC), will expand access to opportunities this summer and beyond through the Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP).
“Summer jobs ensure that more of our young people get the fair shot they deserve,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “I am committed to investing in our young people to ensure they have the skills and experience needed to jump start a career. I want to thank President Obama for his commitment to summer jobs for District residents and young people across the country.”
Earlier today, the White House announced the Summer Opportunity Project, an inter-agency effort to provide tailored support to 16 communities to upgrade and expand jobs, learning, meals, and violence reduction programs for young people this summer and year-round.

Mayor Bowser Launches OpenBudget.dc.gov to Enhance Transparency
On
Friday, May 13, 2016, Mayor Bowser launched openbudget.dc.gov to provide
greater insight and transparency into the District government’s budget, going
back to Fiscal Year 2012. The portal is yet another step by the Bowser
Administration to improve accountability at every level of government. The
Mayor also announced the creation of an Open Government Officer position in her
executive office to support agency compliance with the Freedom of Information
Act (FOIA) and the Open Meetings Act.
The
launch of openbudget.dc.gov and the establishment of Open Government
Officer are part of the administrations ongoing effort to improve transparency
in District Government and are part of InnoMAYtion, Mayor Bowser’s month-long
initiative that showcases DC’s innovation ecosystem.
“Since day one, I have been clear that this government is the peoples’ government. Openbudget.dc.gov delivers the kind of transparency our community deserves,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Soon I will also bring on an Open Government Officer to ensure that we are doing our part to comply with FOIA and Open Meeting requirements—and demonstrating our commitment to transparency in District government.”

Six
African Artists Disrupt Time In a New Smithsonian Exhibit
In Senses of Time:
Video and Film-Based Works of Africa, a new exhibit at the Smithsonian
National Museum of African Art, six artists use the body to challenge our
understanding of time and whether it must always move forward.
The exhibit, which first opened in December at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
features artists Yinka Shobinare MBE
of Nigeria, Sammy Baloji of the
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Theo
Eshetu of Ethiopia, Berni Searle
of South Africa, and Moataz Nasr
of Egypt. The Smithsonian edition, which opened May 18, adds Sue Williamson, a South African artist
and activist.
Senses of Time runs through March 26, 2017 at the Smithsonian
National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC.

14 South Sudanese Chosen for Obama African Leaders Program
Fourteen people from South Sudan will take part this year in the Young African Leaders Initiative, begun in 2010 by President Barack Obama.
The participants depart for Washington next month. They will travel to American University and other college campuses for a six-week program to learn business entrepreneurship, civic leadership or public management.
The fourteen South Sudanese will join hundreds of others selected across Africa to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the flagship program of the African leaders initiative. The goal of the fellowship program is to empower young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking so that they, in turn, empower their communities.

Universities to Gain from 59 New Diaspora Fellows
A total of 59 African-born scholars based in the United States and Canada have been selected to join universities in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda to work on academic projects with their peers as part of the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program or CADFP.
According to Dr. Paul Zeleza, CADFP chair and vice-chancellor of the United States International University-Africa, or USIU-Africa, in Nairobi, Kenya, the program’s advisory board has also selected 41 African universities to host the fellows based on collaborative project proposals submitted by the universities.
“The visiting fellows will work with their hosts on a range of projects across disciplines that include, but are not limited to, research methods, agro-forestry, development of e-learning modules, special education, nursing, curriculum development, music and academic writing,” said Zeleza.

Diabetes Self-Management Education
A series of classes are offered on a regular basis for individuals with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. An individual appointment with the diabetes educator after attending class is encouraged for review and modification of a participant’s ongoing care. Individual appointments with the dietitian offer individual meal planning for each participant.
A physician referral is required for all diabetes education class registration. That referral should include the diagnosis, reason for attending classes and the name and date of birth of the participant.

Second Public Workshop
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will hold the second public workshop for the Rock Creek East II Livability Study. The meeting will be open-house style with a brief presentation at 6:30pm. At the meeting, the study team will present draft recommendations and focus areas for improvements to transportation safety, better connections to destinations, green infrastructure, and sustainability to enhance community quality of life. Feedback on these draft recommendations will be used to refine them and examine their feasibility throughout the summer.
