Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

The sun is out, the weather is heating up, and summer is around the corner.  That means more people out and about, more visitors, and more activity all over Washington, DC.

We want to make sure that residents of all ages have a safe and productive summer.  The District is offering summer camps, summer school, and the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program - which gives 14-24 year old participants an opportunity to learn the value of hard work. Join us this Friday at Oxon Run Pool as we open outdoor pools and spray parks for the summer.

If you want to learn more about all of these programs and more, you can visit summer.dc.gov.

Let’s have a productive, safe and fun summer, DC!

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

ICYMI: Yesterday, the Obama Administration issued a Statement of Administration Policy, standing with District residents. The statement expresses the Administration's opposition to the House passage of H.R. 5233, which would would repeal the District of Columbia's Local Budget Autonomy Amendment Act of 2012. Our Fight for Statehood Continues

statehood

The New Columbia Statehood Commission (NCSC) is taking serious steps toward achieving statehood for the District of Columbia. The Commission has released a draft Constitution and began hosting working group meetings.

Starting next week, NCSC will host community town hall events throughout the city to receive public comments on the draft constitution. The constitution is available online at statehood.dc.gov for both review and comment for residents who may prefer to share feedback online. The full list of upcoming community town halls can be found at statehood.dc.gov

Please consider joining us by signing up for a working group or attending a town hall. Your feedback is important. We need your help to achieve statehood and full representation in Congress.

Biking to Work

bike

Last week, residents from across the District biked to work for the annual Bike to Work Day, which encourages commuters to try bicycling as a healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to driving. There were 83 ‘pit stops’ around the Washington metropolitan region welcoming bicyclists with refreshments and prizes. Automatic bike counters installed by the District Department of Transportation found that pit stop locations experienced 250 percent more cyclists than an average weekday this month.

With all this biking, it's no surprise that DC was also recently named the fittest city in the nation for the third consecutive year in a row!

Supporting Age-Friendly Businesses

agefriendly

On Thursday, Mayor Bowser recognized the work of 32 District businesses newly designated as Age-Friendly, that provide exceptional service to older adults.

DC’s Age-Friendly DC initiative brings together government and community partners to work together to transform DC into a healthier and better place to grow older.  The District has joined 400 cities and communities from across the world by participating in the World Health Organization's age-friendly initiative.  DC is on track to become the third U.S city to be internationally recognized as an ‘Age-Friendly City’ when we complete our five-year effort in October 2017.

The District has added more than 23,000 jobs since January 2015 and will continue to work towards increasing good paying jobs for District residents.
