State Board to Hear From Deputy Mayor on School Facilities and Honor Outstanding Students

 

Washington, DC- The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) will hold its monthly public meeting on May 18, 2016. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at 441 4^th Street, NW, Old Council Chambers, Washington, D.C. 20001.

During the meeting, the SBOE will honor four outstanding District students for their achievements in and out of the classroom. Rachel Page, a senior at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School, has been selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar and as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Noah Kravitz, a senior at Georgetown Day School, has been selected as a U.S. Presidential Scholar as well. Rachel Snyderman, a senior at Woodrow Wilson Senior High School, and Colby Bosley-Smith, a senior at Capital City Public Charter School were selected as the District’s delegates to the National Youth Science Camp. Each of these students demonstrates consistent mastery of academic subjects as well as non-academic pursuits. They will be recognized for their success with ceremonial resolutions.

The SBOE will also hear from the Deputy Mayor for Education, Jennie Niles on the Bowser Administration’s school modernization and facilities plans. In Mayor Bowser’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget submission, she has proposed a new approach to the Capital Improvement Plan. Deputy Mayor Niles will provide information about that process. The Deputy Mayor will also address recent reports of schools with elevated lead levels in the water and the corrective actions and testing being done to ensure student safety.

Individuals should provide their names, addresses, telephone numbers, and organizational affiliation, if any, by the close of business the Monday prior to the meeting and bring fifteen (15) copies of their written statements with them to the meeting and are encouraged to submit one (1) electronic copy in advance.
