Forty years ago, on June 21, 1985, a small group of young activists shook the streets of D.C. with a “punk percussion protest” outside the South African Embassy. That same night, the band Rites of Spring ignited the stage at the 9:30 Club in what would become a defining moment for a movement. Dubbed Revolution Summer, this uprising of sound, sweat, and solidarity reshaped the local punk scene—and reverberated far beyond it.
Join us on Saturday, June 21 at 1 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library for a powerful two-part panel event marking the 40th anniversary of Revolution Summer. We’ll bring together artists and activists who lived it, made it, and are still making sense of its legacy today. Moderated by Chris Richards of The Washington Post, the panel features:
-
Amy Pickering, Fire Party and Dischord Records—the one who first named "Revolution Summer"
-
Pete Stahl, frontman of Scream
-
Bobby Sullivan, of Lünch Meat and Soulside
- Mark Andersen, co-founder of Positive Force DC and co-author of Dance of Days
Plus, attendees are invited to browse a newly curated exhibit of the Positive Force DC Collection, donated by Mark Anderson to the People’s Archive back in 2015. The exhibit was created in collaboration with Positive Force volunteers and is on display beginning June 12 in the glass case in the 4th floor punk exhibit and on the walls outside the People's Archive.
