(Washington, DC) - The societal veil of stoicism often shrouds the emotional world of Black men, hiding the pain beneath. Courtney B. Vance and Dr. Robin L. Smith address this profound issue in their collaborative work, "The Invisible Ache: Black Men Identifying Their Pain and Reclaiming Their Power."
Early in his career, actor Courtney B. Vance faced the heart-wrenching loss of his father to suicide. Recently, he endured the tragic loss of his godson to the same fate. Yet, as mental health discourse becomes more prevalent, it often bypasses one of the most vulnerable groups: Black men. Vance's personal experiences with mental health challenges within his family have positioned him uniquely to advocate for greater mental health awareness and support within the Black community alongside licensed psychologist Dr. Robin L. Smith.
Their book serves as a beacon, guiding toward acknowledgment, healing, and empowerment, while unveiling the complex emotional struggles Black men face.
"The Invisible Ache" is a guide to authentic stories and practical advice for navigating emotional challenges. It aims to spark crucial conversations, helping Black men identify emotional pain and reclaim mental well-being. This event is a call to action for the community to step into a space of understanding, support and collective healing.
A question-and-answer segment will allow the audience to engage with the authors. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase "The Invisible Ache" during the event from MahoganyBooks. To learn more or register, visit https://dclibrary.libnet.info/event/9332556.
