 DC Public Library is thrilled to partner with Solid State Books to bring an exciting conversation to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. The evening hosts cofounder of BET and first African American woman billionaire, Sheila Johnson, and creator of the #diversepines hashtag and the Diverse Spines® book community, Jamise Harper, for a discussion of Johnson’s new memoir, Walk Through Fire. In the book, and through this conversation, Johnson will share her deeply personal journey through love and loss, tragedy and triumph—and an inspiring story of overcoming toxic influences, discovering her true self, and at last finding happiness in her work and life.

Chambers and actress, writer and director Laiona Michelle from the cast and crew of Little Girl Blue to discuss their journey of bringing Nina Simone's story to life through Broadway. A small snippet of the musical will be performed and the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. |

 DC Public Library is happy to partner with Politics and Prose and the DC Public Library Foundation to host Newbery and National Book Award winning author Jacqueline Woodson for a conversation about her new book, Remember Us. Joined by renowned author and poet Jason Reynolds, the two will chat through the lyrical narrative and its exploration of the ideas of change, healing and growth. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
As a part of the Know Your Power event, Broadway at The National is thrilled to partner with the library for a special ticket giveaway for The Pre-Broadway Washington, D.C. Premiere of THE WIZ. Teens who attend the Jacqueline Woodson talk on Oct. 11 will receive a raffle ticket to enter to win a ticket for the opening night performance at The National Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30pm

Join us Oct. 18 and 19 for a special event launching Goodmaps, a wayfinding app for your mobile phone or iPad to help any visitor, especially blind and low vision library patrons, navigate the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library building more independently. Find the nearest restroom, meeting space, or department you want to visit and navigate there with a responsive, accessible app!
To celebrate this launch, the library will be hosting special tours to help you learn how it works within the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library building. The tours will take place Oct. 18 and 19 at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
Come to as many tours as you wish- no registration required! Tours are first-come, first-served and will meet in the vestibule of the MLK Library.

The Children’s Africana Book Awards (CABA) are presented annually to the authors and illustrators of the best children’s and young adult books on Africa published or republished in the U.S. Africa Access and the Outreach Council of the African Studies Association (ASA) created CABA in 1991 to encourage the publication and use of accurate, balanced children’s materials about Africa.
Join them on Saturday, Oct. 14 starting at 11 a.m. at the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library at Howard University for their 2023 CABA Ceremony & Festival. Meet the 2023 CABA Winners and participate in a Q+A about their work, enjoy engaging art activities inspired by winning books, and hear the Sticks+Bars Youth Marimba Ensemble.
