Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) and guided by a committee of educators, Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. The day, held each year on Mar. 2, is designed to motivate children and teens to read books they can see themselves reflected in, as well as those that allow readers to see a world or character that might be different from them. Read Across America is a true celebration of the gift books give us to see and be seen. Take part in this year’s reading day by choosing a new title from their list of suggested books celebrating Black History Month!

The Public Square is back, this time welcoming the charismatic author of Marvel Comic's latest hit series America, Gabby Rivera! Gabby is joined by Lupita Aquino, better known as Lupita Reads, for a conversation on joy and it’s ability to be an unapologetically revolutionary act. Experience them together on Saturday, Mar. 4 at 3 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and hear them share what stories have brought them joy, as well as how Gabby is incorporating joy in storytelling in her new podcast Joy Uprising.
The Public Square is presented in partnership with the DC Public Library Foundation and Pepco, an Exelon Company. It is a celebration of “third spaces” or the social spaces in our communities that help us cultivate our sense of belonging outside of our first place - our homes - and our second - our workplaces. Join us at The Public Square as we foster good conversation and connection.
