DC Public Library is excited to celebrate Black History Month by lifting up those who have left their mark, using their words and actions to resist the oppression of the Black community. Embodying resistance looks different for everyone, so we encourage you to explore what that means for you and your community. If your resistance looks like active collaboration, DC Public Library encourages you to join us for engaging events throughout the month with speakers like Emerald Garner, Etan Thomas, and Martin Luther King III. Perhaps your embodiment looks more like diving into one of the books on our curated book lists, or maybe it’s letting your joy fill a room of friends while listening to one of the inspiring playlists on Freegal. Whatever it may be, discover helpful resources at DC Public Library.
Additionally, make sure to check out our new series As We R. Released weekly, As We R features Black Washingtonians sharing what Black Resistance means to them and their work. Thank you to those who have shared their stories with us. How will you embody resistance and join those leaving their mark this Black History Month?

Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors books, videos, and other outstanding materials for children and teens. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, the ALA Youth Media Awards (YMA) - including the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards - guide parents, educators, librarians, and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in the field of children’s and young adult literature and media.

During Winter Challenge you can train your brain and body like a Washington Wizards player. Players train nearly every day with their teammates to be ready for the next game, but they also work hard off the court to create healthy habits like taking time out of their day to read, move and make healthy choices. As a student, you also are working hard in school! Winter Challenge is here to help you think like a Washington Wizard by finding ways to read, move and connect each day. Participating is easy, simply:
