It’s officially DC Reads month! Join us, and the rest of this city, as we read through Clint Smith’s How The Word Is Passed and explore the monuments and landmarks—those that are honest about the past and those that are not—that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation’s collective history, and ourselves.
Throughout the month, DC Public Library will host various DC Reads events to dig deeper into the story such as:
-
Sept.14, 6:30 p.m. | A special screening of the documentary Barry Farm: Community, Land, Justice which tells the story of a former site of enslavement in DC and the vibrant community that is Barry Farm;
-
Sept. 20, 5:30 p.m. | A conversation at The National Portrait Gallery with Dr. Dana Williams of Howard University;
-
Sept. 28, 4:30pm | A book club at the Parklands-Turner Library for an exploration of the text itself;
-
Sept. 29, 6:30 p.m. | An author talk with How The Word is Passed author, Clint Smith at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library;
Join us in learning about the essential histories of our country, and city, and share in DC Reads month with us!
