Celebrate the local DC punk scene with a summer concert series overlooking the city! DC Public Library’s DC Punk Archive is bringing local bands to the roof of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library every second Wednesday through August. This month, we welcome Cinema Hearts and Continuals on Wednesday, July 13 starting at 6:30 p.m.
DC Punk Archive is a project of the People’s Archive which looks to preserve and provide access to the music and ephemera of DC’s local punk music history. Much of the collection was donated by local Washingtonians (and DC Public Library employees!), and parts have been digitized and made available through the library's digital collections portal, DigDC. Explore the distorted riffs, art-filled zines and photography of DC punk music with us!

Dive into principles of design in the pop-up installation Dieter Rams: A Look Back and Ahead, now on view in The Labs at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
The exhibit explores German industrial designer Dieter Rams’ ‘10 principles of good design’ and invites the public to reflect on his ideas about design for a better world and his well-known motto “less, but better”. The selected objects and sketches on view are part of an international traveling exhibit on view June 15-July 15 at the Goethe-Institut Washington. Come check out the pop-up at DC Public Library and then swing by the Goethe-Institut for the full collection!

Art has long been used as a tool to inspire change and challenge power. What change would you like to see in the world? Pepco, the DC Public Library Foundation, and DC Public Library invite teens ages 13-19 to find their power and use it to creatively address a topic that is important to them. Between May 16 and Aug. 16, teens can submit an original work of writing, photography, illustration, or music that expresses their feelings on a social issue. Judges will be looking for pieces that are not only well-crafted, but have a strong voice and perspective on a subject pertaining to civic engagement.
Four winners will be selected in the categories of Illustration, Writing, Music, and Photography. Entries will be judged by representatives from Pepco and D.C. Public Library's Teen Council.
Want to get a little practice in before submitting? Join us for one of our upcoming Know Your Power workshops:
