![Women's History Month](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/DCLIBRARY/2022/02/5573779/3977281/website-womens-history-month-3_crop.png) Women’s History Month was first declared by Congress in 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women's History Project (now known as the National Women's History Alliance). Each year since, March has been a month for us to celebrate the historic and contemporary contributions women have made both to the United States and around the world.
In 2022, we are celebrating the theme Providing Healing, Promoting Hope. This theme "pays tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and is also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history...The 2022 theme proudly honors those who, in both public and private life, provide healing and promote hope for the betterment of all." (National Women's History Alliance)
This month, you are invited to celebrate Women's History Month with DC Public Library! Check out a few highlighted events below and stay tuned to the Library's calendar as more events are added throughout March.

Riot Grrrl Zine Workshop, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library
Wednesday, Mar. 16, 4 p.m.
Riot Grrrl started in the 1990s when a group of women in Olympia, Washington held a meeting about sexism in the punk scene. From there, an entire subculture erupted involving art, activism, music, and zines. While zines have existed since the 1930s (or earlier!), many came out of the Riot Grrrl movement, ranging in topics from feminism, to music, to body image. A zine can be anything you want it to be. Once completed, your handmade zine can be added to the Teen Space's in-house zine collection!

![DCPS Ready for Pre-K](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/DCLIBRARY/2022/02/5579427/3979954/screen-shot-2022-02-25-at-3-11-18-pm_crop.png) DC Public Schools (DCPS), believes that supporting children’s Social Emotional development (including positive self-image, sense of belonging, and empathy for others) is essential to children’s success in Pre-K and beyond.
(DCPS) is committed to becoming an anti-racist school district. This work takes all of us and they know that families are children’s first, and most important, teachers. They believe that conversations about race should be happening at home, for all children, even before children begin school.
DCPS Ready for Pre-K! is excited to welcome Dr. Traci Baxley who is hosting a special three-part series for families with young children. On Wednesday, Mar. 16 she will host the second of the three sessions, Black Joy: Talking to Young Children About Race. This session is for Black families who want to create a safe space to talk about race to their children. This workshop will help you to begin to have “the talk” in an age-appropriate way and to lean into the love and the joy in living in their black skin.
The content of this session focuses on the experience of Black families with very young children (from infancy to age 5).
