The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library Remembers the Life of Ethel Delaney Lee
The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library remembers the life of Ethel Delaney Lee, who passed away peacefully on Jan. 28, 2022. A political and community activist based in Ward 4, Lee was one of the first black female police officers in Washington and went on to serve more than two decades as a State Level Attendance Officer in the DC Public Schools. A founding member of Ward 4 Democrats, Lee played strategic roles in the election campaigns and political careers of many—including Mayor for Life Marion Barry.
This jacket, covered with buttons showing decades of support for Barry’s political career, was gifted by Lee to Marion and Cora Masters Barry in 1999. It is on view in the permanent exhibit, Up from the People, located on the fourth floor of the MLK Library.
