On the evening of April 4, 1968, shots rang out at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and laid claim to the life of one of America’s greatest Civil Rights pioneers, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
While this brought great shock to our nation and resulted in decades of socioeconomic turmoil for communities of color across the country, it sparked a move in Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1968, landmark legislation that provided for equal housing opportunities for all Americans, just one week later.
Last year, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of these events, I stood before the National Council of Churches, their partner organizations and so many others to present the “Rally to End Racism and Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Resolution of 2018.” Although we are now 51 years removed from that moment in time and beset by considerable progress, we know that there is still much more work to be done.
As the District celebrates Fair Housing Month during April, I (as Chairperson of the Committee on Housing & Neighborhood Revitalization) am pleased to join in keeping the promise of providing equitable programs and policies that will make #OurDCHome a more affordable place to live.
We shall never forget the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His memory will forever be enshrined in our hearts.
