Fall Prevention Awareness Week
By Gabi Snyder
Falls are a common and prevalent issue among older adults — with an estimated 37 million falls each year leading to millions of hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Annually, there is a nationwide observance dedicated to raising awareness of falling and prevention. In 2025, Fall Prevention Awareness Week will be observed from Sept. 22 through Sept. 26.
Each year, Fall Prevention Awareness Week serves as a crucial reminder of the dangers that falls pose, particularly to older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four Americans aged 65 and older experience a fall annually. These falls can lead to severe consequences, including broken bones, head injuries, and loss of independence. As we observe Fall Prevention Awareness Week, it's essential to raise awareness and take proactive steps to reduce the risk of falls among older adults.
Older adults are more susceptible to falls due to natural changes in balance, muscle strength, and vision, as well as medical factors like medications and chronic conditions such as arthritis or diabetes. Environmental hazards, like poor lighting or slippery floors, also increase the risk. However, fall risks can be managed with regular exercise to improve strength and balance, reviewing medications with a health care provider, and making home modifications like adding grab bars and improving lighting. Regular vision checks and proper footwear also play a key role in preventing falls. By addressing these factors, older adults can significantly reduce their risk and maintain greater independence.
The Weld County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) recognizes this week locally through a week of evidence-based programming. This year, our organization will have events and exercise programs including Tai Chi in the park, stroke outreach, and Walk with a Doc events. Reach out to Gabi Snyder at (970) 400-6117 to learn more about Fall Prevention Awareness Week events and wellness classes to improve strength, balance, and disease self-management offered by AAA all year long!

The Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM) is a large-scale dental clinic that is held annually in a Colorado community.
The concept is simple: Create a two-day dental clinic in a large facility and open the clinic doors to the community. Dental services are provided to any person on a “no questions asked” basis. The best part about COMOM is that this quality treatment is provided at no cost to patients.
When: Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18 Time: Clinic doors open at 6 a.m. and doors remain open until clinic is full Where: The Ranch Events Complex (5280 Arena Circle, Loveland)
What to know before you go
- No appointments. First come, first served, so come early!
-
Optional: Doors will open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 to enable you to be seen by a dentist – before the clinic – to identify your dental treatment plan, which you will return on Friday or Saturday for.
- Dental treatment is provided for fillings, extractions, root canal treatment (nonmolars), cleanings and children’s dentistry. Due to preparation time, crowns and flippers will be accepted on a limited basis. Dental treatment for dentures is Friday only.
- Blood pressure testing will be performed on all patients, and blood glucose testing will be performed on patients who have a history of diabetes.
- Patients with blood pressure or glucose levels that are too high cannot be treated at COMOM.
- Bring your medication list. Attendees are also encouraged to bring snacks, water and items to pass the time (books, magazines, puzzles).
