Join us! this month when we will discuss the book ”Becoming" by Michelle Obama
An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States. When she was a little girl, Michelle Robinson's world was the South Side of Chicago, where she and her brother, Craig, shared a bedroom in their family's upstairs apartment and played catch in the park, and where her parents, Fraser and Marian Robinson, raised her to be outspoken and unafraid. But life soon took her much further afield, from the halls of Princeton, where she learned for the first time what if felt like to be the only black woman in a room, to the glassy office tower where she worked as a high-powered corporate lawyer--and where, one summer morning, a law student named Barack Obama appeared in her office and upended all her carefully made plans. Here, for the first time, Michelle Obama describes the early years of her marriage as she struggles to balance her work and family with her husband's fast-moving political career.

EXTRAS
HISTORY NUGGET WITH JIM CLARKE & TONY MAURO: VAIL VALLEY VOICES
Hired in January of 1963, Jim "JC" Clarke was a member of the original Vail Ski Patrol. Ski patrol personnel of that era needed to be game for new experiences and a jack-of-all-trades. In this Vail Valley Voices History Nugget, Clarke discussed repair of the first telephone wires on Vail Mountain. Lodgepole pines that swayed readily in the wind served as poles for the phone lines.
ART @ YOUR LIBRARY
Vail Public Library proudly displays local artists’ work in our Community Room on a rotating schedule. Public viewing is available during library hours.
The art on display for the month of July is:
A collaboration between the Vail Valley Art Guild (VVAG) and Eagle County Veteran Services.
Norm Vogel, who is a Navy Veteran, is a talented photographer who divides his time between residences in Vail and Hawaii. He also travels abroad to capture magnificent landscapes. Norm is also developing a themed body of works which includes people in museums, fishermen at work and people in the street. Norm's photo of the young girl making daisy chains has beautiful color balance and composition.
Bob Will, an Air Force Veteran and long time Red Cliff resident is known for his unique "found object" sculptures. Many of his works are substantial in size and can be seen around the valley in public places. In one recent piece called "Male and Female", the two steel pieces seem to mesh together but have red paint around the edges. Bob says this depicts relationships that seem to work but always have some friction around the edges. In the sculpture "Lock and Key" he has taken a large rusted lock from the 1800s and superimposed an ornate key over the lock.
The VVAG has been active in the valley since 2014. Their role for this event is curating, hanging, and sponsoring the event for the veterans in our valley.
THIS MONTH'S DATABASE HIGHLIGHT
Poetry & Short Story Reference Center is a rich full-text database containing thousands of classic and contemporary poems, short stories, biographies, essays, lesson plans and learning guides. It also includes high-quality videos and audio recordings from the Academy of American Poets.
