One Book One Valley (OBOV) is back for the 13th year, encouraging all residents to read the same book at the same time to create a Community Book Club.

2024 KICK-OFF EVENT MONDAY, DEC. 11 | 5 P.M. AT THE BOOKWORM (295 Main St, Edwards, CO 81632) Join the Conversation! Celebrate with us the start of this year’s Community Read. Join us! where the selected title will be revealed, and the official proclamation will be read.

VIRTUAL BOOKS 'N BITES WEDNESDAY, NOV. 8 | 5 P.M. VIA ZOOM “November Classics" continue as we turn our attention to Emily Bronte. The title is: "Wuthering Heights" Email Lori at lbarnes@vail.gov to receive an invitation to the Zoom meeting. Wuthering Heights is the first and only novel by the English author Emily Brontë, initially published in 1847 under her pen name, “Ellis Bell”.  It concerns two families of the landed gentry living on the West Yorkshire moors, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and their turbulent relationships with the Earnshaw‘s foster son, Heathcliff.  The novel was influenced by romanticism and Gothic fiction.

ANNUAL SCARECROW BUILDING CONTEST

SATURDAY, NOV. 4 | 10 - 11:30 A.M.

Form a team of friends or family and come build a scarecrow to decorate the library.

The library will provide frames and art supplies. Vail Valley Cares Thrifty Store will provide clothes. Bring accessories to personalize your scarecrow.  Small parts, glue guns and staple guns will be used.

This creative day is appropriate for children 5 years old and older; all children must be accompanied by an adult.  Teens may work independently.

Prizes for the most unique and creative scarecrows!

RSVPs are required, we plan to make 10 scarecrows.

Tumtum & Nutmeg: the rose cottage adventures by Emily Bearn

Tumtum and Nutmeg just want to live out their comfy lives in peace, unbothered by anything as distracting as an adventure. But the holidays are upon them, and it seems to be the time of year when Arthur and Lucy, the disheveled human children of Rose Cottage, and bumbling veteran hero General Marchmouse are most likely to get into trouble. Tumtum and Nutmeg want to make things right, but first they'll have to outwit a wicked mouse named Purple Claw, face a crazed circus ringmaster, and even save Christmas!       Please RSVP to Marion at MSingleton@vail.gov

ORAL HISTORY: VAIL VALLEY VOICES

Andrew Patrick “Andy” Daly was born 10 June 1946 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts to Rowana Bell and Joseph Leo Daly. In 1968, he earned a B.S. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After moving to Colorado in 1969, Daly was a member of the ski patrol and trail crew at Aspen Highlands. In 1972, Daly worked on the Copper Mountain ski patrol, and by 1982, he was the ski resort’s President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In 1980, Daly earned an M.B.A. from the University of Denver.

Between 1992 and 1996, Andy Daly was President and CEO of Vail Associates and subsequently captained Vail Resorts until 2002. The year 1998 marked the Two Elk fires atop Vail Mountain. According to members of The Family, a spin-off group of the Earth Liberation Front, the arson-determined fires protested the U.S. Forest Service allowance of Vail’s expansion into critical Canadian lynx habitat in Blue Sky Basin. Daly was credited with rallying the community and VR employees during the tragic destruction of the Two Elk holdings.

Over the years, Andy Daly also held ski area leadership positions with Beaver Creek, Lake Eldora, Ski Broadmoor and Powderhorn. In 2000, Daly was inducted into the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame at the Colorado Snowsports Museum as a Sport Builder. He has served on numerous boards including the Vail Valley Foundation, Jimmie Heuga Foundation, Ski Club Vail, American Ski Federation, US Ski and Snowboard Association and National Ski Areas Association. Daly also served on the Vail Town Council and two terms as Mayor: 2007 to 2009 and 2011 to 2015.

THIS MONTH'S DATABASE HIGHLIGHT

Starting November 1, users will see a pop-up on their library’s Kanopy website and the app explaining the new ticket system.

Library’s current play credit number will change to 15 tickets per user per month. Every title will be labeled with a ticket value and viewing window, so patrons will know how many tickets a title will use prior to viewing it. Kanopy service will change from play credits to a new ticket system.

The viewing period for episodic content (i.e., titles in a series) will be standardized based on total running time per season. This change will extend the viewing period for over 75% of episodic content.
