THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHTS
SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Vail Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind everyone about the valuable resources available with a library card.
From borrowing books, ebooks, to getting homework help, learning new skills, or attending story time, a library card helps you do more of what you enjoy. Get a library card and dive into a new hobby. Use your library card to tinker in a maker space and spark your creativity. A library card is your most important school supply—it's elemental, really—and everyone should have one!
Thank you to Disney and Pixar for allowing Elemental characters Ember and Wade to help spread the word about the value of a library card during Library Card Sign-up Month 2023.

Jon Chandler
The Los Angeles Daily News dubbed Denver native Jon Chandler the “best western songsmith since Ian Tyson,” while Texas’s Country Line Magazine exclaimed, “Thank God for Chandler and his gang of musicians.” He hosts America’s Soul Live, a monthly Arvada, CO-based acous-tic concert series. Jon was chosen Best Living Western Musician by True West Magazine, which also named his Westerns “best Western CD”. He was awarded the Western Writers of America’s prestigious Spur Award for Best Song two times, the first in 2009 for Linwood, a fictional examination of the last hours of the notorious gunman Doc Holliday’s life, and the second in 2012 for Morning Star Moon, his observation of Wyoming’s iconic Hole in the Wall country.
EVENINGS OF ENGAGEMENT THE GREAT ANNUAL ECLIPSE OF 2023 WITH RICK SPITZER
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 27 | 5:30 P.M.
Join photographer and naturalist Rick Spitzer and learn about the Great American Annual Eclipse of 2023.
This eclipse will cross the Western United States on Saturday, October 14th.
Seven states are on the path. The maximum eclipse will pass over the Four Corners of Colorado. Eagle County will view an 80% eclipse at 10:34 AM.
An Annular Solar Eclipse is not the same as a Total Eclipse. The moon travels in an elliptical orbit. When the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit, a Total Eclipse may occur, and the entire sun is covered. When the moon is farther from Earth in its orbit, an Annular Eclipse may occur, and the entire sun is not covered.

Join us! this month when we will discuss the book “State of Wonder” by Ann Patchett
In a narrative replete with poison arrows, devouring snakes, scientific miracles, and spiritual transformations, State of Wonder presents a world of stunning surprise and danger, rich in emotional resonance and moral complexity. As Dr. Marina Singh embarks upon an uncertain odyssey into the insect-infested Amazon, she’s forced to surrender herself to the lush but forbidding world that awaits within the jungle. Charged with finding her former mentor Dr. Annick Swenson, a researcher who has disappeared while working on a valuable new drug, she will have to confront her own memories of tragedy and sacrifice as she journeys into the unforgiving heart of darkness. Stirring and luminous, State of Wonder is a world unto itself, where unlikely beauty stands beside unimaginable loss beneath the rain forest’s jeweled canopy. Patchett delivers a gripping adventure story and a profound look at the difficult choices we make in the name of discovery and love.

Ever since she was a puppy, Stella was trained to use her powerful beagle nose to sniff out dangerous chemicals and help her handler keep people safe. But during a routine security inspection, Stella misses the scent of an explosive. The sound of the blast is loud and scary. Unable to go back to work because of her anxiety, Stella is retired as a working dog. When a young girl named Cloe wants to adopt Stella, the beagle knows this is her last chance to prove her worth. But how? When Stella smells a strange chemical inside Cloe’s body, a scent that surges just before the girl has a seizure, Stella’s nose makes the connection. But how can Stella warn her new family without them thinking she’s having an anxiety attack? How can she convince others that she can be a new kind of service dog and hopefully save Cloe’s life? Told from Stella’s perspective, this story is about a special dog who must find the courage to overcome her fears in order to help save a young girl with epilepsy.

Being in Nature has never failed me to be a resource of happiness (and gratitude) when needed. But beyond its obvious, undeniable beauties, it is nature’s resilience, its perfect organization in the tiniest of details, its absence of drama that fascinate me.
THIS MONTH'S DATABASE HIGHLIGHT
Britannica School
This resource provides great research material appropriate for elementary school, middle school, and high school students. Content from the high school level of Britannica will also appeal to adults.
