Join us! this month when we will discuss the book ”Horse” by Geraldine Brooks
A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in American history: from these strands, a Pulitzer Prize winner braids a sweeping story of spirit, obsession, and injustice across American history. Kentucky, 1850. Jarrett, an enslaved groom, and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. As the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name painting the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack. New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a 19th equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance. Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly drawn to one another through their shared interest in the horse–one studying the stallion’s bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred, Lexington, who became America’s greatest stud sire, Horse is a gripping, multi-layered reckoning with the legacy of enslavement and racism in America.

Wondrous Rex By Patricia MacLachlan
Grace’s aunt is a writer. She works with words every day and teaches Grace interesting words like “melancholy” and “delirious.” But Lily is often “flummoxed” by her writing. Her stories don’t go anywhere, her desk is a mess, and her writer’s group can’t help. So Lily posts an ad for an assistant: A writer of books needs an assistant, a coach, a helper, for inspiration and some magic! The next day, Grace opens the door, and there is Rex: a Labrador retriever who will change Grace’s life, and Lily’s. The word “amazing” is an everyday word for Rex, who inspires Lily, and helps Grace find the words to write her own story.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the Caulkins couple was very active in the fledgling community of Vail. In addition to participating in community ski races, local Baby Buggy Parades, fund-raising home kitchen tours, and potlucks, the Caulkins helped establish Vail Interfaith Chapel, Vail Valley Medical Center, and Vail ski mountain.

She returned to college, enrolled in a life-changing elective entitled Opera as Literature, and graduated from the University of Colorado (CU Denver) in 1977. She is active regionally with Opera Colorado and nationally with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 2004, Caulkins was astonished to learn of her namesake … The Ellie Caulkins Opera House. In a surprise coordinated by son George Peck Caulkins III and Denver mayor John Hickenlooper, her husband, George, made a generous gift to the city of Denver in her honor.
