JUNE'S PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR ADULTS
HOLDING SPACE: COMMUNITY PORTRAILS 2020-2022 EXHIBITION TOUR & ARTIST TALK WITH PHOTOGRAPHER STAS GINZBURG
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21 | 5:30 P.M.
Pride month shows how far we’ve come, and how far we have yet to go.
Pride month prompts parades, celebrations, and demonstrations, promoting LGBTQ+ visibility and equality. It falls in June, to mark the Stonewall riots for gay rights in New York in 1969 that spawned the first such march.
Since the murder of George Floyd, a resurgence of activism, from Black Lives Matter to Stop Asian Hate to advocacy for trans, immigrant and sex workers’ rights, has filled the streets. Queer and trans voices of color have come to the forefront of this fight for collective freedom.
These portraits by Stas Ginzburg celebrate and create visibility for our LGBTQ+ siblings who live unapologetically in their truth while advocating for the rights of all marginalized communities.
This exhibition has been organized by Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art and will be on view at the Library's Community Room for the month of June.
EVENINGS OF ENGAGEMENT WITH HARPER POWELL
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28 | 5:30 P.M.
Evenings of Engagement is a series of events aimed at adults, with the purpose of offering exciting, interesting, fun or educational experiences.
Join us! in the library's Community Room for this engaging concert featuring
Harper Powell
Harper Powell is a BMI songwriter from Salida, Colorado, who started singing not long after she began taking her first steps. A strong bent of classic rock requires a second listen to appear clearly to the average listener. Like a young Alison Krauss, Harper marries the offbeat visionary style of Syd Barrett with the dark conceptualization of Grace Slick to beget a brand-new but still retro-inspired musical statement.

Join us! this month when we will discuss the book ”The Library Book" by Susan Orlean
Susan Orlean re-opens the unsolved mystery of the most catastrophic library fire in American history, and delivers a dazzling homage to a beloved institution – our libraries. On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. Raging through the stacks, the fire reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. It was the largest library fire in the history of the United States: it destroyed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more, and shut the library down for seven years. The mystery remains: did someone purposefully set fire to the library—and if so, who? Weaving her life-long love of books and reading with the fascinating history of libraries and the sometimes-eccentric characters who run them, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Orlean presents a mesmerizing and uniquely compelling story. With her signature wit, insight, compassion and talent for deep research, she investigates the legendary Los Angeles Public Library fire to showcase the larger, crucial role that libraries play in our lives, and reveals how these buildings provide much more than just books and are needed now more than ever.

"The Silver Arrow" by Lev Grossman
Kate and her younger brother Tom lead dull, uninteresting lives. And if their dull, uninteresting parents are anything to go by, they don’t have much to look forward to. Why can’t Kate have thrilling adventures and save the world the way people do in books? Even her 11th birthday is shaping up to be mundane — that is, until her mysterious and highly irresponsible Uncle Herbert, whom she’s never even met before, surprises her with the most unexpected, exhilarating, inappropriate birthday present of all time: a colossal steam locomotive called the Silver Arrow. Kate and Tom’s parents want to send it right back where it came from. But Kate and Tom have other ideas and so does the Silver Arrow and soon they’re off to distant lands along magical rail lines in the company of an assortment of exotic animals who, it turns out, can talk. With only curiosity, excitement, their own resourcefulness and the thrill of the unknown to guide them, Kate and Tom are on the adventure of a lifetime and who knows? They just might end up saving the world after all.
