NOVEMBER'S VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR ADULTS

VIRTUAL BOOKS 'N BITES
WEDNESDAY, NOV. 10 | 5 P.M. VIA ZOOM
“November Classics" continue as we turn our attention to Charlotte Bronte.
In November, our Books ‘n Bites title is the classic "Villette"
Email Sandy at SRivera@vailgov.com to receive an invitation to the Zoom meeting.
First published in 1853, Villette is Brontë's most accomplished and deeply felt work, eclipsing even Jane Eyre in critical acclaim. Her narrator, the autobiographical Lucy Snowe, flees England and a tragic past to become an instructor in a French boarding school in the town of Villette. There she unexpectedly confronts her feelings of love and longing as she witnesses the fitful romance between Dr. John, a handsome young Englishman, and Ginerva Fanshawe, a beautiful coquette. The first pain brings others, and with them comes the heartache Lucy has tried so long to escape. Yet in spite of adversity and disappointment, Lucy Snowe survives to recount the unstinting vision of a turbulent life's journey - a journey that is one of the most insightful fictional studies of a woman's consciousness in English literature.

EXTRAS
DEBBIE BOLON-FEENEY
ORAL HISTORY: VAIL VALLEY VOICES
Debbie Bolon-Feeney was born 17 December 1950 to David Lowell Bolon and Dorothy Agnus Slaughter Bolon in Columbus, Ohio. She attended Ohio University in Athens and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Emphasis in Painting) and an Education minor. In June 1991, Debbie Bolon and Dr. Jon Feeney were married at Cordillera near Edwards, Colorado. They have two children: Alexandra Marie, who has a Masters in Fine Art and lives in NYC, and Andrew Ian who is currently serving in the US Army Reserves.
Debbie Bolon-Feeney began her professional life at the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in New York City (NYC). As a 1970s Affirmative Action beneficiary, Bolon-Feeney found herself running the Saturday Desk which translated into being in charge of Saturday program operations and engineering for NBC. In 1974, Bolon’s responsibilities included airtime coordination of Saturday Night Live (SNL). In her Vail Valley Voices oral history, Bolon-Feeney reported that the NBC women professionals were very supportive of each other. Described as “authentic and warm,” Gilda Radner was Bolon-Feeney’s favorite SNL icon.
During her final semester of college, Debbie Bolon-Feeney realized ceramics was her true artistic passion. In 1976, she attended Summervail Art Workshop (SAW) and fell in love with the SAW movement, its inspirational progenitors, Randy Milhoan, Dan Telleen and Jim Cotter, and the Rocky Mountains. In 1978, Bolon-Feeney relocated to Vail. Bolon-Feeney worked as a Ceramics Assistant for SAW until 1984; she also taught skiing for fifteen years and worked as a wilderness backpacking guide for the Meet the Wilderness program. As an Art educator, Bolon-Feeney encouraged children at Red Sandstone Elementary School in Vail for thirty years. She retired in 2016. Bolon-Feeney also taught for Alpine Arts Center and Colorado Mountain College and has won Best of Show at several art festivals in the Vail area.
ART @ YOUR LIBRARY
Vail Public Library proudly displays local artists’ work in our Community Room on a rotating schedule. Public viewing is available during library hours.
The art on display for the month of November is by local artist, Charmayne Bernhardt.
Charmayne Bernhardt works primarily in watercolor but also does charcoal, acrylic and oil paintings. She does many paintings for the US Forest Service and the Town of Vail with educational illustrations of nature. These can be seen around Vail, hiking trailheads, Piney Lake, Sylvan Lake, Vail Mountain and Ford Park along Gore Creek and many parks. These help people understand the importance of taking care of this wonderful place we live. She also paints labels for Vail Mountain Coffee and Tea, does paintings for cards, and has illustrated children’s and medical books, as well as private commissions. She was classically trained at an “old masters” art school and is grateful for a strong foundation in drawing and fundamentals. Charmayne has lived here since the early 70s and never tires of the wonder around her.
If you are interested in displaying your work, please contact Sandy Rivera at 970-479-2331 or SRivera@vailgov.com
