Friends of Libraries groups have their very own national week!

October 16-22, 2022 is the 17^th annual National Friends of Libraries Week, and it’s the perfect opportunity to give our Friends a big shout out for all they do to make a difference for us.

Vail Public Library receives a lot of help from our Friends. Over the years they have funded children’s programming, provided new furniture, contributed funding for new and emerging technology, and support the project to digitize the Vail Trail newspaper. In addition, the Friends have rallied countless times to advocate for adequate library funding.

Friends of Vail Public Library are always looking for new members. Join us! this is a terrific way to  give back to our town and make its library even better.

OCTOBER'S VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON PROGRAMS AND EVENTS FOR ADULTS

THURDAY, OCT.  6 | 10 A.M. - 4 P.M.

Learn how to write your  favorite words or  name in Japanese with a calligraphy brush. Yoko Watanabe, Japan Outreach Initiative Coordinator for Japan America Society of Colorado (JASC), will host this calligraphy demonstration, dressed in her traditional Japanese Kimono and help you create your keepsake to bring home.

VIRTUAL BOOKS 'N BITES

The library's book club meets each month for a fun and lively virtual book club experience!

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month via Zoom.

Join us! for this month when we will discuss the book "A Man Called Ove: A Novel” by Fredrik Backman

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon; the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him ‘the bitter neighbor from hell’. But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior, there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.

GENTLE YOGA

These classes focus on a gentle yoga practice and introduce flavorings from China, including Tai Chi and Daoism.

Kim Brodin is an Eagle County native, her background includes 12 years in education. She incorporates playful language, nature, and quotes into the healthy movements of your yoga practice.

No grass grows under this group's feet. They're a walking, talking book club. Our Walking Book Club is a fun, social outing with social distancing. Come even if you have not read this month's title. Instead, share what you are reading with the group.

We will meet in the library's Galleria and head out for a discussion of October's Books 'n Bites title, "A Man Called Ove: A Novel” by Fredrik Backman.

Vail Public Library and Children’s Garden of Learning invite you to sit in the driver’s seat and explore the many vehicles that serve our community.

Kids will love checking out trucks of all shapes and sizes. They will have an opportunity to climb inside of a: trash truck, a Police car, a Town of Vail Bus, an ambulance, a fire truck, and many more.

FROM OCT. 15 - NOV. 4

"To remember is to live again", that is what the altar reminds us, that we are always close to our loved ones and this helps us celebrate the life of those who have passed.

Patrons of all ages are invited to build this offering and make "Papel Picado" and "Flor de Cempasúchil" with tissue paper. You are also welcome to place a photo of your loved one. Learn the meaning of the different elements that compose the altar.

The altar will be on display until November 4.

Come paint pumpkins, enjoy pizza, snacks and a fun movie.

This program is aimed at Tweens and Teens.

Join us! on the third Tuesday of each month through the school year for a fun and interactive arts and crafts program. Appropriate for elementary-aged kids.

LEAF PRINTING TUESDAY, OCT. 18 | 3:30 P.M. Let's celebrate Fall! We will go on a leaf hunt and collect leaves of varying shapes, sizes, and colors. One of the greatest things about leaf prints is that you can do it 10 times and make 10 unique masterpieces! 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHRISTO  AND JEANNE-CLAUDE'S ACCLAIMED  "VALLEY CURTAIN"

GALLERIA DISPLAY AT VAIL PUBLIC LIBRARY 

Though the artist duo Christo and Jeanne-Claude's masterwork Valley Curtain (1970-72) survived a mere 28 hours in the face of overpowering winds across the Grand Hogback Mountain Range in Rifle, Colorado, the fleeting project would send ripples through the art world. Valley Curtain was one of the couple’s first grand scale projects executed in the United States and 50 years later, the wide-ranging impact of Valley Curtain on the international art world and members of Colorado's creative community can still be felt today.

This diplay was created in partnership with Summervail Art Workshop Legacy Project.

BILL HEICHER

HISTORY NUGGET: VAIL VALLEY VOICES

Retired Colorado Division of Wildlife officer and game warden, Bill Heicher, reflects on a humorous experience featuring Elwood, a homemade deer decoy.  Heicher is interviewed by Tony Mauro, the "Voice of Vail."

William Heicher was born in Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver in 1948. He was raised in Littleton, Colorado and graduated from Arapahoe High School. In 1970, Bill Heicher graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Wildlife Management.

After spending three seasons working in a US Forest Service Hot Shot crew, Heicher was employed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDOW). He worked for CDOW from July 1971 to August 2003 and retired as District Wildlife Manager for the Eagle District. Between 2003 and 2011, Heicher worked for the Town of Eagle as the community's first Open Space Coordinator. Heicher served on the Eagle Town Council from 1994 to 2002, presiding as Mayor Pro-Tem between 1998 and 2002. Heicher also served on the Board of Directors for the Eagle River Watershed Council, Eagle County Planning Commission, Eagle County Open Space Advisory Committee, and Western Eagle County Metropolitan Recreation District.

Bill Heicher is married to Kathy Lell Heicher, who is the retired editor of the Eagle Valley Enterprise. Kathy Heicher is currently the Board of Directors President of the Eagle County Historical Society; she also works as a freelance journalist and local history author. The Heichers have 2 sons.
