THIS MONTH'S SPOTLIGHTS
SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
September is Library Card Sign-up Month when libraries nationwide join the American Library Association (ALA) to remind parents, caregivers, and students that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.
Libraries play a crucial role in the education and development of children, offering a variety of programs to spark creativity and stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Through access to technology, media resources, and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams, explore new passions and interests, and find their voice.
This year, Tony Award-winning performer, actress, singer-songwriter, and philanthropist Idina Menzel (Frozen, Wicked) and her sister, author and educator Cara Mentzel, will serve as honorary chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. Idina and Cara are excited to remind everyone that one of the best places to find your voice is at the library. During Library Card Sign-Up Month, they want us to explore all the library has to offer, like-new children’s books, access to technology, and educational programming.
Vail Public Library along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving community needs. To sign up for a library card or to learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit vaillibrary.com/library-card-basics/

The library's book club meets each month for a fun and lively virtual book club experience!
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month via Zoom.
Join us! for this month when we will discuss the book “The beekeeper of Aleppo” by Christy Lefteri
Every morning, Nuri the beekeeper rises early to hear the call to prayer before driving to his hives in the countryside. On weekends, his wife Afra, a gifted artist, sells her paintings at the open-air market in the square. They live simply, rich in family and friends, in the hills of the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo — until the unthinkable happens. When all they love is destroyed by war, Nuri knows they have no choice except to leave their home. But escaping Syria will be no easy task: Afra has lost her sight, leaving Nuri to navigate her grief as well as a perilous journey toward an uncertain future in Britain. Moving, intimate, and beautifully written, this is a story for our times. It reminds us that our lives can be upended instantly — and brings a journey in faraway lands close to home, never to be forgotten.
Email Sandy at SRivera@vailgov.com to receive an invitation to the Zoom meeting.

EXTRAS
ROB LEVINE
ORAL HISTORY: VAIL VALLEY VOICES
Robert Murray LeVine (known as Rob) was born 21 April 1956 in Baltimore, Maryland to David LeVine and Barbara Cohen LeVine. After just six weeks of life, LeVine’s family moved to Littleton, Colorado and at age sixteen, LeVine’s family moved again to Stamford, Connecticut. After graduating from Rippowam High School in 1974, LeVine moved back to Colorado. In 1978, LeVine graduated from Colorado College in Colorado Springs with a degree in Business Administration.
Immediately after college, the Antlers of Vail General Manager, Bud Benedict, hired Rob LeVine to work the front desk. During the ensuing years, LeVine worked key administrative positions at the Antlers Lodge, including Financial Controller, Assistant General Manager and General Manager (GM). LeVine remained at the Antlers his entire career, and ultimately, became the longest running GM in Colorado hospitality (1987 to 2016).
In the 1990s, Rob LeVine was elected to the Vail Town Council and served on the council for four years. He was also a member of the Executive Committee and Strategic Planning Committee of Bravo! Vail. At various points in time, LeVine chaired the boards of Vail Symposium, Vail Resort Association, Vail Tourism Bureau (now Vail Valley Partnership), Vail Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Municipal League Policy Committee, and the Colorado State Chamber of Commerce. ART @ YOUR LIBRARY
Vail Public Library proudly displays local artists’ work in our Community Room on a rotating schedule. Public viewing is available during library hours.
The art on display for the month of September is by local artist, Raj Manikam.
Artist Statement: My photography starts with the art of observation, and that comes from paying attention to my environment. I use the element of the witness consciously. My photos range from the environment to human interest depiction—these images, partnered with essays, tell even more of the narratives. - Raj Manickam | AllinGoodLight
Artist BIO:
What makes Raj Manickam's work so singular is his engagement between image and story. He strives to shine a light on the reality of the human experience through composition and honest storytelling. Working within a unique "triangle" of context, Raj brings a synthesis of Fine Art, Story Telling, and Photo Journalism to his uncommon photography in modern pictorial circles. His photos can often experience an attempt to recapture missed opportunities from the past while seeking to secure and preserve the present. Raj strives to capture the spontaneity of events while looking for the story to emerge in his photos. His work appeared at the University of Massachusetts, Lincoln Gallery in Loveland, Hillard Gallery in Kansas City, and several other galleries. More recently, in January 2021, he was featured in Vail Magazine.
If you are interested in displaying your work, please contact Sandy Rivera at 970-479-2331 or SRivera@vailgov.com
