NOVEMBER'S VIRTUAL EVENTS FOR ADULTS
VIRTUAL BOOKS 'N BITES
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10 | 5:00 P.M. VIA ZOOM
“November Classics" continue as we turn our attention to the Bronte sisters.
In November, our Books ‘n Bites title is the classic “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte.
Email Lori at LBarnes@vailgov.com to receive an invitation to the Zoom meeting.
Orphaned as a child, Jane has felt an outcast her whole young life. Her courage is tested once again when she arrives at Thornfield Hall, where she has been hired by the brooding, proud Edward Rochester to care for his ward Adèle. Jane finds herself drawn to his troubled yet kind spirit. She falls in love. Hard. But there is a terrifying secret inside the gloomy, forbidding Thornfield Hall. Is Rochester hiding from Jane? Will Jane be left heartbroken and exiled once again?
JANE EYRE LECTURE WITH LAURIE MORTENSEN
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17 | 5:00 P.M.
In addition to our monthly discussion, we are pleased to feature a guest lecturer, Laurie Mortensen, who is the English Department Chair and English teacher at Vail Mountain School.
Join us via Zoom Meeting ID: 872 6593 4833
Laurie is a graduate of Middlebury College and The Bread Loaf School of English, also at Middlebury. She is a true lover of the classics, and she is thrilled to talk about "Jane Eyre" and Charlotte Bronte because this particular classic remains one of her most favorite books to read and to teach. Re: "Jane Eyre", Laurie had this to say, “This historical period was an amazing time when women really began to have a voice in the writing arena, even though they were forced to publish under pseudonyms. However, these voices have become timeless and women writers are now solidly a part of our literary canon.”

EXTRAS
BILL & SALLY HANLON ORAL HISTORY: VAIL VALLEY VOICES
Bill and Sally Hanlon discuss their lives in early Vail, Eagle County, Colorado. Sally Hanlon examines her role, alongside the collaborative efforts of fellow Vail Trailblazer Josef Staufer, in establishing Red Sandstone Elementary School. Hanlon and Staufer worked with Ernie Chavez, the Eagle County School Board president and longtime postmaster in Vail, to organize the elementary school for Vail, Minturn and Red Cliff. Bill and Sally Hanlon also discuss their service on the Vail Mountain School board for over twenty-two years.
Bill Hanlon discusses the establishment of Vail Interfaith Chapel, the Jerry Ford Invitational Golf Tournament, and the Hanlon children teaching in the Blind Skier Program. Hanlon also addresses the early days of the Courtesy Patrol, a forerunner to today's professional Ski Patrol. Additionally, Hanlon notes Sarge Brown’s professional coordination of a 1960s Jr. Olympics trial and his brilliant management of Vail Ski Mountain.
Bill and Sally Hanlon humorously expound on the evolution of their Nu Gnu exclusive nightclub into a raucous rock-n-roll bar, inadvertently setting off the new Marriott’s fire alarm with fondue cuisine during the Hospital Family Dinner Dance, Drs. Eck and Bevan patching up locals during the brief, yet colorful, Friday Night Fights event at Dobson Ice Arena, and Rev. Don Simonton slipping on the icy steps of the new Chapel. Rev. Simonton apparently broke his leg during the mishap, had his leg set at Vail's new clinic by Dr. Tom Steinberg, and returned in an hour to perform one of the first weddings in Vail.
ART @ YOUR LIBRARY
Vail Public Library proudly displays local artists’ work in our community room on a rotating schedule. Public viewing is available during library hours.

Christine Sena is a native New Englander but has lived on both coasts and the mid- Atlantic. She started taking Art classes as a child at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She recently returned from a workshop in Taos and in the past has taken many classes in oils, watercolors and pastels. The paintings in this exhibit are all winter local scenes.
