Happy Earth Month, Superior! This month, we challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new as you continue to take steps toward a more sustainable lifestyle. Maybe it’s taking public transportation or riding your bike for errands, or adding more plant-based proteins to your diet. Looking for inspiration? We hope to see you at one of the upcoming events and opportunities in Superior to celebrate our connection with and appreciation for the planet we call home.
As always, thank you for helping make Superior a sustainable, resilient, and vibrant community.

Resilient Soils: Growing in Containers with Compost Saturday, May 16 10:30 a.m. to noon, or 12:30 to 2 p.m. Superior Community Center 1500 Coalton Road Registration required
Want to learn more about gardening but don’t have much (or any) yard space? Learn how to grow an edible garden on a patio, in a patch of dirt, or anywhere you can, using containers. This free workshop for gardeners of any level will cover the basics of growing plants that thrive in containers and the importance of compost as a soil amendment. There will be informational presentations followed by hands-on planting time to ask questions. Plant an edible plant in a 5-gallon grow bag you can take home. Sign up for one of the two workshops while space lasts!

Town asks residents to voluntarily restrict water use this spring
With warm temperatures and a low snowpack, the Town encourages residents, Homeowners Associations, and businesses to observe voluntary water restrictions. You may be inclined to start sprinkler systems early with the warm weather, but we encourage you to hold off — not irrigating now will help preserve the Town’s water supply if dry conditions continue.
The Town is also doing its part to conserve water by reducing irrigation on Town property by approximately 20%. Athletic fields will continue to be irrigated to meet service levels, and other areas will be maintained to minimize long-term impacts.
The Town encourages the following activities:
- Wait to water lawns
- Leave automated sprinkler systems off as long as possible
- Plan to program your sprinkler system to start in mid-to-late May
- Hand-water trees and plants as needed
- Don’t waste water
- Avoid spraying water on concrete and asphalt
- Promptly repair leaking sprinkler systems
- Use buckets or a nozzle with a shut-off valve
- Conserve water
Through partnerships, programs, ordinances, and resource development, the Town is committed to supporting efficiency and conservation and protecting water quality for our residents, businesses, and wildlife populations. Visit the Town’s Sustainable Water webpage for more information on programs and resources for conserving water in our community.

Free compost is available at the Town’s Yard Waste site
Free compost is available now on a first-come, first-served basis at the Town Yard Waste Site, 2125 Honey Creek Lane. Compost donated by Republic Service, as well as some purchased by the Town, is available to Superior residents to help "close the loop" by giving back the finished product made from food scraps and yard waste collected via curbside composting.
Any Superior resident can stop by the Yard Waste Recycling Facility during open hours (Wednesday after 2 p.m. until dusk and weekends from 8 am until dusk) to receive compost for their yard while supplies last. There is a limited amount of compost available– please be prepared to show identification with a Superior address and bring your own shovels and containers for self-serve scooping.
Compost allows air flow into garden soil, helping the soil to retain moisture longer and providing beneficial bacteria for the plants in your landscape. It also helps supply slow-release nutrients to your plants. You can put compost on in the spring to prepare garden beds for planting or during the growing season.
