New smart meters to be installed by Xcel Energy throughout Colorado
Xcel Energy is currently in the process of installing new smart meters throughout Colorado, which are replacing Xcel customers' existing meters at no cost to them. Superior residents can expect these installations to take place beginning in October and continuing through December, though some residents may receive the new meter installation before or after Xcel's scheduled window.
Residents will receive an installation notice from Xcel on their energy bill 90 prior to a smart meter being installed. They will also receive a postcard from Xcel, along with a letter or email containing more information. Xcel's installations will take about 15 minutes and a door hanger will be left on the front door once the installation is complete.
Please find the complete and up-to-date information about this installation project on Xcel's Smart Meter Project Page. If you have any questions, please contact Xcel Energy at 800-895-4999.

 What is a smart meter?
A smart meter is a meter that allows two-way wireless communication between the meter and Xcel Energy. This lets Xcel receive information, such as usage and outage information, in real time.
Xcel anticipates that this will allow them to provide residents with real-time monitoring of power usage, faster response during outages, the ability to resolve some outages remotely, and more efficient energy grid management as they transition Colorado's energy grid to more renewable sources.

Do I need to do anything?
Existing meters are located in different places on each home. Take a second to make sure nothing is obstructing the service provider from performing the installation. If your meter is accessible, then Xcel will take care of everything else. If they are unable to complete the installation, they will leave information for you on what to do next.
Can I opt out of a smart meter installation?
Yes, but Xcel will install a new meter whether it is a smart meter or not. While installation will still be free, they will charge a monthly fee for meter reading services after the installation of the regular meter is complete. Smart meters will not have this meter reading fee. Those wishing to opt out should contact Xcel Energy at 800-895-4999 as soon as possible so they can have a regular meter installed instead.
