Commission News

Girl Scout Ella Malm has earned the Gold Scout Award by completing a project, in coordination with the Historical Commission, that is on display at Superior Community Center. Her project was to create a scale model of the Superior Historical Museum lost during the fire. Ella approached the Historical Commission, went through the approval procedure with the Girl Scout leadership, then embarked on the demanding process of researching and constructing the museum model.

The miniature building is 1/24 the size of the original with a 1 square foot base. The lap siding consists of individual craft sticks (popsicle sticks) carefully glued to a foam board base. Ella glued each scale model cedar shingle to the roof pieces. The doors and windows are G scale plastic donated by San Juan Models of Arvada.

The museum model is now proudly on display in the Superior Community Center, along with pertinent photographs and explanatory placards. Be sure to stop and take a look the next time you are there. Ella was advised and supported by Commission Chair Larry Dorsey and Staff Liason Jennifer "JG" Garner, who are extremely impressed with the hard work and attention to detail that went into this very special model.

After meticulously completing this project, Ella’s next venture is to finish her senior year at Monarch High and attend the Colorado School of Mines in the Fall. Hats off to you Ella!

Did You Know That:

  • Doc Holliday, legendary frontiersman involved in the notorious Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, among many such escapades, is buried in a hillside cemetery in Glenwood Springs?
  • The Johnson bore of the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel was not named for President Lyndon Johnson, but rather for Edwin “Big Ed” Johnson, a noted Colorado politician who served as Colorado Governor and a U.S. Senator, as well as several other roles, in '30s and '40s?
  • The historic mining town of Telluride is named after the precious ores found in the chemical compound tellurium? However, a prevailing myth is that the name was derived from the saying “to hell you ride,” which described the difficulty of getting to the remote town.
