BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING

DRINKING WATER WARNING
Superior Metro District No. 1
Had a Loss of Pressure

Este informe contiene información muy importante sobre su agua potable. Tradúzcalo o hable con alguien que lo entienda bien.

Out of an abundance of caution, BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING. This is due to fire fighting in the Town of Superior on December 30, 2021, which resulted in a significant loss of pressure in the drinking water system.

NOTE: This advisory is NOT related to COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that the “Virus that causes COVID-19 has not been detected in drinking water.” For additional information on COVID-19 and drinking water, you can refer to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s website: https://covid19.colorado.gov.

What does this mean? What should I do?

  • DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one (1) minute, and let it cool before using, OR use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. Due to potential COVID-19 concerns, boiling your water is the lowest risk option since you do not need to leave your home.
  • Water main breaks resulting in a loss of system pressure can introduce disease-causing organisms into the water system. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause short-term effects, such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.
  • If you have an infant, severely compromised immune system, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your doctor about drinking this water. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by bacteria and other disease-causing organisms are available from EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

What is being done?

  • We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water.
  • This loss of pressure was due to heavy water uses for firefighting the Marshall Fire.
  • We are actively looking for leaks and open hydrants to stop the flow of water where it is not needed.
  • System pressure will be restored when the fire fighting ends and water system operators and Town staff locate and isolate all leaks.
  • You are advised to boil your water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until you receive notice that the water is safe.
  • Upon notice that the water is safe, you should run your water for 2-3 minutes to flush any sediment that may be in the water.
  • Town staff and water operator are finding and isolating leaks to bring pressure back up.

We anticipate resolving the problem by January 3, 2021. For more information, please contact Alex Ariniello at alexjariniello@comcast.net or 303-579-9839, or 124 E. Coal Creek Drive Superior, CO 80027.
