Historical Commission Corner
JUNE 2021
The Historical Commission is happy to report the Museum opening and Historic Walk events on May 8th went very well. Scheduled visitors and walk ups enjoyed their museum tours. More than 40 participants made the stroll to Grasso Park and the Industrial Mine site to learn about the history of those places. Despite the gusty winds and potential of rain, intrepid hikers of all ages forged on! We feel it was a successful day!
The Superior Historical Museum will be open again on June 5th. We will follow the same sign-up procedures as last month to schedule tours in order to keep the number of visitors consistent with the small space in the museum. We hope to see you on Saturday, June 5th between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

For anybody interested in knowing more about the history of our fair Town, we have two books available for your consideration. Both can be purchased from the receptionist at Town Hall or at the Museum when open.
The first is a small but highly informative work called Superior – A Folk History. Originally published in 1983 followed by a 1996 edition, and now re-printed in 2020, this book contains stories and recollections of older Superior residents who were interviewed by nine local youths. The project was coordinated by Original Town resident Cynda Arsenault under the Superior Community Involvement Program. The result is this priceless collection of lore from those who experienced firsthand the Superior of by gone days. Cynda had the books reprinted and donated a large number to the Town and Historical Commission. The book cost is $10.
Next is Lost Superior – Remembering the Architectural History of a Colorado Coal Mining Town assembled and published by the Superior Historical Commission. The intent of this book was to utilize pictures of buildings past and present before more were lost to time. In selecting these photos, we also captured the history of our Town in the process and that is what graces the pages of this book. Some chapter titles include, Industrial Mine, Depots & Trains, Bridges & Floods, Schools. Compiled by Commission leader Doreen Ruffe and volunteers including Town Staff, the book was financed by a grant from the Colorado Historical Society’s (now History Colorado) State Historical Fund along with matching funds from the Town of Superior. It was printed in time for the centennial of the incorporation of Superior in 2004. Although the Town was founded in 1896 but incorporation came later. The book cost is $15.
Did you know . . .
- That on June 8, 1917 University of Colorado All-American and later professional football player and, even more impressively, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1962-1993) Byron White, was born in Fort Collins? (d. 2002)
- That on June 28, 1976 the first female was admitted into the Air Force Academy?
- When completed in 1910, Denver’s Daniels and Fisher Tower, at 372 feet in height, was at that time the third tallest building in the United States? It was modeled after the campanile in St. Mark’s Plaza, Venice, Italy.
