Unemployment Scam

Unemployment Fraud Using
U.S. Bank Reliacards

Unfortunately, with the rise in unemployment insurance claims associated with COVID-19, we have also seen a rise in fraudulent unemployment claims. The most common reports of unemployment fraud involve U.S. Bank Reliacards being sent to people who have never filed for unemployment benefits. Reliacards are debit cards where people’s unemployment benefits are credited if they do not sign up for direct deposit. They are being utilized by fraudsters who are often taking advantage of people’s stolen identities.

What should you do if you receive an unsolicited U.S. Bank Reliacard?

  • Deactivate the card by calling the number on the back of the card
  • Notify the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment either by phone at 1-855-279-1678 or at https://cdle.colorado.gov/fraud-prevention
  • Contact the three consumer credit bureaus and put a fraud alert on your name and Social Security Number (SSN)
  • File a police report with your local law enforcement agency. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has an online reporting system that is available to report this type of incident at: www.BoulderSheriff.org
  • Document everything along the way

What are other steps you can take to help prevent and monitor for fraud and identity theft?

  • Do not give out personal identifying information, such as social security numbers, over the phone
  • Check your bank/credit card statements for unusual activity
  • Have your bank/credit card statements sent online and not by mail
  • Check your credit reports for unusual activity at: www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228
  • Consider using a locked mailbox
  • Get more information and tips to prevent fraud at: https://stopfraudcolorado.gov/
