Background

The vast majority of Colorado elections utilize the plurality method, also known as “first past the post,” in which the candidate(s) with the highest number of votes are elected, whether or not the highest number of votes represents a certain minimum percentage or majority of total votes cast.

For many years, election integrity activists and subject matter experts have advocated alternative voting methods such as ranked voting and approval voting as voting methods that are superior to the plurality method.

Purpose

The purpose of the December 15th public meeting is to outline and discuss the timelines for and estimated costs of developing the systems and technological infrastructure necessary for Colorado’s 64 County Clerks and Recorders and the Secretary of State’s office to fully support the ranked voting and approval voting, methods, should the General Assembly mandate or authorize their use in presidential primary elections, state primary elections, general elections or coordinated elections in the future.

Meeting materials

All documents and materials referenced during the public meeting will be publicly posted and available on the Secretary of State’s website, together with a recording of the Zoom virtual meeting.
