Treasurer: Polly Lawrence makes ballot, Brian Watson falls short

DENVER, April 20, 2018 -- Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams announced today that only one of two Republicans attempting to petition onto the primary ballot for the office of state treasurer collected enough valid voter signatures.

State Rep. Polly Lawrence of Douglas County and businessman Brian Watson of Greenwood Village were required to gather 1,500 valid signatures from Republican voters in each of Colorado’s seven congressional districts for a total of 10,500 signatures.  Lawrence submitted 12,119 valid signatures. Watson submitted 11,315 valid signatures, but he fell short in the 2nd Congressional District. He collected just enough, 1,500, in the 7th District. (See attachments.)

Lawrence will join state Rep. Justin Everett of Littleton on the June 26 primary ballot. At the GOP assembly over the weekend, Everett received enough votes from delegates to eliminate three other treasurer candidates. At the Democratic assembly, state Rep. Dave Young of Greeley and  businessman Bernard Douthit of Denver qualified for the ballot for treasurer.

Our office issues a news release after a candidate's signature review is completed, and also updates a list of petition candidates posted on the Secretary of State's web page. The June 26 primary ballot must be set by April 27.
