Silverthorne News
Summit County’s primary energy provider, Xcel Energy, has introduced a non-pipeline alternative solution to enhance its Eastern Mountain Gas System in Summit and surrounding counties. The proposed Mountain Energy Project involves the construction of large compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) sites across the County (including locations along Highways 9 and 6 in the towns of Keystone, Breckenridge and Frisco). The construction of these visible sites will have lasting effects on the community, including but not limited to the social and environmental impacts of new gas sites, increased energy costs borne by local ratepayers to pay for the project, and the lack of incentives to reduce demand for and reliance upon natural gas across the community.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC), which regulates utilities and facilities across the state, is considering approval of the Mountain Energy Project. Residents of Summit County are encouraged to participate in the public comment process to help guide the PUC in their decision.
Wednesday, June 18, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.: Town Hall at the Community & Senior Center in Frisco hosted by the Colorado office of the Utility Consumer Advocate. At this event, the Utility Consumer Advocate office will explain the project, offer tips for crafting effective public comments, and answer questions. This town hall is an educational and training opportunity; you do not need to attend to comment on the Mountain Energy Project.
Wednesday, June 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.: Public hearing at the Community & Senior Center in Frisco. Spanish translation will be available, along with light refreshments and a kids’ activity area. You may arrive to comment any time between 5:30 and 7 p.m.
Monday, August 4, from 11 a.m. to noon and 6 to 7 p.m.: Virtual public hearing via Zoom. Register online at puc.colorado.gov

The Silverthorne Art Board invites artists to install murals on pre-assembled mural stands during the Town of Silverthorne’s August First Friday Block Party event on Friday, August 1, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. These mural installations will later be displayed along the Blue River Trail for up to three years.
The overall theme should incorporate visual “living eulogies” about Silverthorne. These murals should convey a sense of painted admiration for life in Silverthorne, displaying tributes to the things we love about our town and to pay homage to what is here while it lasts. Beautiful parks, natural landscapes, art (spots) and recreation (centers), First Fridays or Celebrations, we want artists to share what speaks to them about Silverthorne.
In addition to the mural’s final location along the Blue River Trail, the murals will also be displayed at the Silverthorne Pavilion on August 28 as part of the Future Town Tour event, presented by Warm Cookies of the Revolution. The August 28 Future Town Tour event at the Silverthorne Pavilion is titled “Living Eulogies,” and artists are invited to share their tributes to Silverthorne and their artistic stories during the event, if interested.

Noxious weeds pose a threat to our environment and economy. They can take over entire ecosystems, destroy natural habitats, damage agricultural production, and cause losses worth millions of dollars. As they spread to natural areas, they can harm wildlife by crowding out native plants that these ecosystems depend on. Left unchecked, these invasive species can be nearly impossible to eradicate.
Some of Colorado's noxious weeds can produce more than 300,000 seeds per plant, and each seed can remain viable for up to 20 years as it seeks out the ideal location and conditions for germination. Each plant that is eradicated can have a lasting impact.
The State of Colorado, as well as the Silverthorne Town Code, requires every owner, tenant, or occupant to control the growth of noxious weeds on their property. Per Town Code, property owners who fail to control noxious weeds can be fined up to $300 per day. To avoid fines and additional incurred costs, please take steps to control weeds on your property and prevent them from spreading to neighboring lands.

Updates to Silverthorne's Landscape Code
Silverthorne Town Council recently updated the Town's landscape code to encourage or require the use of drought-tolerant and Rocky Mountain plants. The new landscape code also increases compatibility with fire mitigation requirements, complies with new state legislation, clarifies existing landscape requirements and helps reduce water use as identified in Silverthorne's Sustainability Strategic Plan.
The landscape code is for new development and redevelopment. Existing homes and properties do not need to change their landscaping. The landscape code applies to permanent, perennial trees, shrubs, and ground cover, not annual gardening. For questions regarding the new landscape code, please contact the Town's Community Development department.

When playing in and around the water, it’s not enough to simply have a life jacket with you. Whether you’re fishing, boating, paddling, or anything in between, be sure to wear it during all of your recreational water activities. Colorado's cool water temperatures make water safety and life jackets especially important, even on warm summer days!
